How are you doing?” Castor took a deep breath, shoving away all feelings and thoughts about his mom. I’ll deal with them later, he thought. “Fine,” He even added a smile. Mac narrowed his eyes. “Dude, no one is fine after coming home to see their mom’s corpse.” Mac knew the words were harsh, but Castor’s emotionless response was strange. “Alright, I’m not fine. Who would be fine? I’m just trying to take this slowly.” Castor looked away from Mac. “It’s okay to feel things, Castor. You don’t need to hide everything. Or pretend everything’s fine.” Mac said. But Castor did. Emotions gave you away, made you vulnerable. You got made fun of, you were broken by the very people you wanted to love you. Your own family. Castor had to hide things, because otherwise, people would use them to hurt him. Twist him up and tear him apart. So he locked all his emotions up, burying them deep. But they can only stay buried for so long. Eventually, his defenses were broken by the wave of pure feeling. And then… well, he didn’t like to think about it. But he hurt people. People who didn’t deserve it. People like Venus. After moments like these, all rational thoughts left him, leaving him torn open and lashing out at people who tried to help him. It didn’t make sense. No one ever was to blame except himself. Vulnerability was his worst enemy. Or maybe it was himself. He sighed, Mac still waiting for a response. “No, Mac. It’s not okay. Not okay for me at least.” Mac shook his head, but became quiet again. He turned on the T.V, trying to drown out the awkwardness with meaningless words. “So…” Castor tried to fix that awkwardness. “What do you think the girls are up to?” Mac grunted. “Probably something way more fun than this.” Castor winced. “Yeah, I think that’s a given.” Suddenly, a huge crash made both boys jump up into a defensive stance. They looked out the window, and started laughing. The police car they had been driving around appeared to have backed up into a light, two girls jumped out of the car, looking around nervously. Castor and Mac stopped laughing. “I think we might get charged for that… should we help?” Castor asked. “Nah,” Mac said. “Let them take care of it. I’m too tired to pretend to be a rational adult.” Castor grinned. “What about being a gentleman?” Mac rolled his eyes. “Chivalry's dead. At least for normal people. But you can go help them, Prince Charming.” Castor was already out the door, heading down the stairs to where the crash had occurred. “You two okay?” He asked, walking over. Venus gave him a nervous smile. It was still outstandingly gorgeous. He didn’t think he’d ever be able to get over her large blue eyes and perfect red lips. Or ever not have to resist the urge to run his fingers through her long blonde hair. Colleen gave him an indignant look. He got the feeling she didn’t like him that much. “I hope it doesn't look like we’re okay. But hey, it might, because it’s a huge upgrade from being attacked by midgets, cannibals, and centaurs. And the occasional hospital trip.” Castor winced inwardly, the mention of that weird lady making his shoulder flare up with pain. Mac walked up behind him, looking over at the car and the slight bit of smoke rising near the back of the car. “Sorry!” Venus said, “We couldn’t figure out how to make it work.” “It’s fine.” Mac said. “Easy fix.” He walked over to the car and pushed it forward away from the pole. He examined it for a couple seconds, then got to work pulling strange tools from his tool belt.
As Mac worked on fixing the bent pole, Castor, Colleen, and Venus stood awkwardly. Their group seemed to have a ton of these awkward silences. Colleen struck up the conversation. “You guys settle in alright?” “Yeah. Nice room, A.C, TV. “ He replied, shrugging. She nodded, not saying anything else. Mac stood up suddenly, wiping sweat off his brow. It really was a million degrees out here. “Done.” He said, nodding. “Wow. That was fast.” Venus said, looking impressed at the perfect pole. Castor felt a flare of annoyance, but smothered it quickly. We’re not dating anymore! She can do what she wants. “Nice job Mac. Are you ready to head back to our room?” Castor asked. “Actually,” Venus said, “Can you hang back for a second Castor?” “Of course.” He said, automatically.Colleen and Mac went back to their room without a word. It was kind of a procedure they were used to. “What’s up?” He asked. “I- I just wanted to apologize for your mom. I realized I only made you apologize, which wasn’t fair, you were the one who lost your mom. And it is my fault, I got us into this mess, she was looking for me and-” He kissed her. Stupid, right? But she was being so sweet, apologizing for something that wasn’t her fault, blue eyes tearing up, and all he could watch as she talked were her lips. She melted into him for a second, making him hunger for a more passionate kiss. But she pulled away too fast, leaving him feeling empty. She looked at the hurt expression on his face. “Sorry! Sorry, I just thought that we aren’t together and…” She muttered under her breath. “No, it’s fine. I shouldn’t have done that. You just looked so…” How could he explain it? Beautiful because she let herself be vulnerable? Then, she kissed him, feeding his hunger again. Her lips were just so perfect. They kissed for a while, then fell onto the parking lot, still kissing. The both broke apart, gasping for air, stupid grins on their faces. Venus’s hair was a mess, and Castor’s hand was still stuck in it. “Aren’t we supposed to be brother and sister?” Venus asked. “It’s just an act. Besides, it’s too dark to see who we are anyways. And I missed you.” He said, standing up and helping her up too. “Same. But… where do we go from here?” She bit her lip. “Nowhere. Let’s just stay friends.” He grinned. “Friends who share the occasional kiss.” She laughed. “I guess we’ll talk more tomorrow. Goodnight Castor.” “Night Venus.” He turned to walk back to their room, grinning still at the memory of their kiss.
