The next day a few hours after school I’m hanging out with Jax and the others at the arcade. It’s dark inside the arcade and outside. I have two stuffed animals, both from Jax. One’s a big unicorn and one a small cat. No one else is in the arcade, just our big group. Including Lucas… yep, he’d made the football team easily and is getting pretty popular at school super quickly. He’s already gotten a spot in our group. He’s hanging out with Conner and Ashley now. I stay away from him on purpose so I don’t get all shy again. It makes me shudder. Jax comes up behind me where I stand beside a claw machine and puts his arms around my waist. I lean back against him and close my eyes. A few seconds later I feel someone watching. I open my eyes and look around. My eyes lock with Lucas’s just as he’s about to turn away. We stare at each other for a minute. I feel a blush rising up my cheeks. I quickly look away, thankful for the dim lighting in the room. Jax’s face comes into view beside my right cheek. “You good?” He asks. “Yeah, why?” I reply, drawing my eyebrows together. He locks eyes with me. “You looked at Lucas then your heart started beating faster.” He says in a low tone. “Or maybe… it’s ’cause you’re holding me like that.” I say with a smile, turning around to face him. He pulls me closer. I rest my hands against his chest. I shiver even though his body is pressed against mine. “Do I really give you the shivers?” He asks jokingly. I smirk. Someone calls his name. He quickly kisses me then walks in the direction of the voice. I watch him walk over to Jacob and start talking. “Hi.” A voice suddenly says right beside me. I jump and turn. I sigh as I see Lucas. Then I giggle. “You scared me.” I say lightly. He smiles. “Sorry.” He says. He has his hands shoved in his jeans pockets. He looks around. “Soooo, you and Jax are like… dating…” He looks back down at me. “Right?” He asks. I nod. “Yeah.” I answer. He looks away. “Cool.” He says under his breath. “What’s it to you?” I ask with a smile. He smiles back at me. “I think you’re really pretty and cool.” He says, then immediately walks away. I stare after him. I hear Jax’s voice in my ear. “What’s going on with you two?” He asks questioningly. I snap out of it and turn towards him. “Nothing. He was just asking if we were dating or not.” I reply. He looks around then looks at me steadily. “Well, I heard the words pretty and cool, so I should probably keep my eye on that one.” He says, pursing his lips. “Jax, I was just talking to him.” I say with a shrug. “Either way, I told him that we were dating.” I add. He looks at me for a minute, then sighs. “You’re right. Sorry.” He says. He hugs me. Later when I get home, Mom looks up from the counter. She’s drinking coffee. I drop my two stuffed animals on the couch and walk over to the kitchen. I start to make a hot chocolate. “Did you have fun?” She asks. I nod silently. “Something’s going on with you. What’s wrong?” She asks. I sigh. “I honestly don’t even know.” I mumble. “Something with Jax?” She asks. I put the milk in the microwave and sit down beside her. “I mean, I guess.” I say, looking up at the ceiling. Then I look back at her. “I don’t know who I like.” I say, puffing out a breath. The microwave beeps. Mom gets up and takes over making the hot chocolate. I turn around on my stool and watch. “Well, that’s a problem, isn’t it, if you’re dating Jax?” She asks. I don’t answer. “Like I said, I know you’ll come to your senses eventually.” She says, setting the mug on the counter behind me. I smile. “Thanks, Mom.” I say, more for the conversation than the hot chocolate. She kisses the top of my head. “You’re welcome.” She says quietly. I’m at lunch the next day talking to Lucas. He’s actually really nice. We just kinda clicked, ya know? -------------------------More Below!------------------------
Jax walks up. He doesn’t look very happy. “Hey, Quinn, can we talk for a sec?” He asks sharply. I raise an eyebrow and stand up. “Uh, sure.” I reply. He drops his backpack on the bench and grabs my hand. He leads me out to the hallway where there’s still a ton of kids. He grumbles something and he pulls me over to a janitor’s closet and flicks on the light. We both walk in and he slams the door. “What’s going on with you?” I exclaim. He gestures out the door. “I don’t know how I feel about you getting all close up with Mr. Perfect!” He says angrily. I cross my arms and lean against a shelf. “Ok, so I’m not allowed to talk to any guys other than you?” I ask, raising my eyebrows challengingly. “I didn’t say that, I just don’t want my girlfriend holding hands with other guys!” He yells angrily. “What the heck?! We weren’t holding hands!” I argue. He whips out his phone and opens it. Then he shoves the phone into my face. “Proof, Quinn. Proof.” He grumbles. It’s a picture of me and Lucas just a few minutes ago at the lunch table, holding hands under the table. Half of the camera is above the table. We’re both laughing. Jax shoves his phone back into his pocket and studies me. “I honestly didn’t even really notice!” I say, my voice still loud. He rolls his eyes. “How’d you get that anyway?” I ask. “Jacob sent it to me!” He replies. I throw up my hands. “Of course he did!” I yell. “Lucas makes you nervous and shy and I hate it!” Jax yells angrily. I take a step closer to him. “Well, what if I like him more than I like you?” I ask quietly. He puts his hand behind my head and pulls me closer to him. I try to struggle away from him but he puts his other arm around me. I feel helpless. “Even if you did, I’m not done with you yet.” He mumbles. He kisses me and any doubts I had about liking him vanish. Leave it to Jax to kiss a girl and make her fall like a rock. A minute later he pulls away just slightly. “You were saying?” He whispers. “I don’t even remember.” I whisper, shaking my head. He smirks. “Whatdya say we skip school and go to my house?” He asks quietly. I giggle. “You know my parents would kill me.” I mumble. He smiles. “Yeah, I know.” He sighs. He opens the door and flicks off the light. I start to walk out when he grabs my arm. “Hey. We good?” He asks softly. I smile. “We’re good. For now...” I reply mischievously. I start to walk away when he grabs my hand and pulls me back into the closet with a smirk. I rest against the shelf again. He leans his arm on the shelf above my head. “Well, if only for now is the case…” He whispers, trailing off and kissing me again. Later as I walk out of social studies, my last class, I hear loud shouting down the hall. I quicken my pace and my mouth drops when I round the corner where the sound is coming from. Kids are surrounding two guys who are fighting. The two guys?
