Title: Cabin 6 Chapter 4: Traces of the Past By: Cobalt (Me) The next morning dawned with a crisp chill in the air, the forest cloaked in a hazy mist that seemed to veil its secrets even further. Jack and Eleanor sat at the small wooden table in Cabin 6, poring over maps and old records in search of clues. "We need to start by retracing your steps from last night," Eleanor suggested, her finger tracing the path Jack had taken through the dense undergrowth. "If there's any chance of finding that mysterious figure again, it'll be along this route." Jack nodded in agreement, his mind still haunted by the echoes of the haunting melody that had followed him through the night. With a sense of purpose, they set out into the forest once more, their footsteps muffled by the carpet of fallen leaves. As they walked, Jack couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, the sensation of eyes boring into the back of his skull sending a shiver down his spine. He glanced over his shoulder, half expecting to see the shadowy figure from the night before lurking in the underbrush. But there was nothing, save for the whispering of the wind through the trees and the occasional chirp of a distant bird. Jack pushed aside his unease, focusing instead on the task at hand as they followed the winding path deeper into the heart of the forest. Hours passed in a blur as they searched, their footsteps leading them ever deeper into the wilderness. Just as Jack was beginning to lose hope, Eleanor called out from up ahead, her voice tinged with excitement. "Jack, come quick! I think I've found something!" Heart pounding with anticipation, Jack hurried to join her, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw what lay before them. Half buried beneath a tangle of ivy and moss, an ancient stone marker stood sentinel in a small clearing, its weathered surface inscribed with faded runes. Eleanor brushed aside the debris, revealing a series of symbols etched into the stone's surface. "This is old, even by the forest's standards," she mused, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns. "I wonder what it means." Jack knelt beside her, studying the symbols with a furrowed brow. Something about them seemed familiar, stirring a long-forgotten memory deep within his mind. With a start, he realized where he had seen them before—the same symbols that adorned the pendant of the mysterious woman in the photograph. "It's a clue," Jack said, his voice barely above a whisper. "A clue to unraveling the mystery of the forest." With newfound determination, Jack and Eleanor set to work deciphering the ancient runes, unaware of the dangers that lay ahead. For in the heart of the forest, where shadows lingered and echoes whispered of long-forgotten secrets, the past held sway over the present, and not all who sought the truth would emerge unscathed.
