On Anzac Day, we celebrate the loss of Australian and New Zealand soldiers, who died in the war to protect their country. Poppies are worn on Anzac Day because when the war ended, the battlefields started to bloom poppies. Soldiers who had survived the terrible war believed the poppies were red from the blood of the dead soldiers. We also eat Anzac biscuits. The Anzac biscuits were one of the only food items that could last a long time. The wives of the soldiers made them, and they could go a long time (like, a whole year). All around Australia and New Zealand, Anzac ceremonies are preformed. A wreath of poppies is layed, and a song called the Last Post is preformed on trumpet. But people don’t clap at the end of the playing of the Last Post; It’s considered disrespectful. We also have a minute of silence, to honour those who died in the war. Anzac Day is a special day of mourning and commemoration. ———————————————————— Art by me Long rant by me
