"Letterbox," as evidenced by my username, is one of my favorite TMBG songs. I aways look forward to it when I listen to Flood, as I feel like it is a highlight of the album. This song seems to be about a narrator who has sent a love letter to a girl who is already his best friend. He is nervous to see her reply, and will never know how she feels about him until he gets the courage to open up his letterbox. Until then, he is running around with a hole in his brain, meaning he is left to wonder what will happen. (Or the hole in the brain could have a darker meaning.) The narrator then feels like he might be betrayed, and maybe feels like he could've made a huge mistake. Perchance love has gone wrong for him before. (The whole "bite out of my spine" bit) As with "Push Back The Hands," I can kind of relate to this one too. I have a crush on my best friend, and I kinda feel like texting her and confessing. But the problem is, I don't know what I would find when she would be to reply. Would it work out alright, or would it ruin our friendship? I also love this song because of how beautiful it is. It is a little more musically complex than some of their other stuff, yet is very short, and says only what it needs to. I love the harmonies (the Johns can actually have some pretty voices when they want.) I like the fast-paced lyrics that are bombarding the listener, like how my questions about what I should do regarding love bombard me.
