A sleek and shiny black Tesla eased into a parking spot outside an old, unused shop. A girl of twelve, with golden-brown hair and sharp, black eyes that could see a mile away stepped out carefully. She was dressed in a sweater with a pug on it, and jeans. This girl’s name was Valentina ‘Val’ Kimberley, and she was no ordinary girl. Firstly, she could drive, and secondly, she was opening the locked run-down shop’s door with a quick flick of her hand. She ran inside, and pushed a button marked ‘elevator’. Once inside the greyish metal box, Valentina jabbed floors number 6, 1 and 2 at the same time. Instead of going up, the lift jerked downwards, swaying from side to side. Val didn’t mind; she was used to it. Since she was now no longer in the public, she used the time to take off her sweater and jeans to reveal a smart black suit with a white shirt and black tie. Adjusting herself one last time, Val stepped into an astonishing place. It was some sort of a lobby; most things were either silver, black, white or made of glass or crystal. At a snow-white desk sat a young man in his twenties. He wore a black suit also, and had the same gold badge on his sleeve as Valentina: a deer looking over her shoulder in a forest, with the letters DDF (standing for Danger Defence Force) at the bottom. “Wolfram,” greeted Val, walking over. “I have a scheduled meeting in Room 18. Please arrange a hoverboard.” “Yes, agent,” Wolfram tapped on a screen. “It will be here shortly.” “Good,” Valentina sat down on the luxurious silver-upholstered sofa, stretching her legs. After missions, she was also sapped of energy. “Will there be appropriate refreshment, Wolfram?” “Yes, there will be the recommended after-mission nourishment, Agent Valentina,” the secretary assured. “Your board is here. Please secure your feet in the metal clamps.” Val arrived at Room 18, which was 400 metres away, in a mere matter of seconds. She calmly un-clamped her feet, knocked on the door, and entered. Sitting at the long silver table was a brunette woman of about forty. She had a strict but kind expression, and she wore black also, except aside from her gold badge, she also had many pins, including one which read ‘Captain Tanya Brown’. “Hello, Agent Valentina,” the woman nodded for Val to sit, and pushed several packets and little cartons, like juice boxes, at her. “Good to see you, Captain Brown,” answered Val, who was pulling out colourful pellets the size of Smarties from the packets, chewing them up and inserting straws into the cartons. “Mission success. We have tracked down the vampire Earl Humdinger. A team has already been dispatched to bring back the earl.” Smiling, the Captain cleared her throat, clearly about to say something important. Val leaned forwards. Captain Tanya Brown was definitely one of her favourite DDF officers. “Since you are…ah…quite an accomplished agent,” began Brown. “We have decided to tweak your mission procedures. You will be partnered with another accomplished agent.” Valentina didn’t know what to say to that. Yes, she was accomplished. She spoke: English, Portuguese, French, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish and Yoruba fluently, played the flute, piano and violin, was a five-star child chef and the best actress in DDF. But a partner? “Captain, no one in Danger Defence Force has been partnered for two centuries!” she protested, wringing her hands. “Correct,” Captain Brown said, as serene as ever. “However, the system worked quite well in the olden days, and I thought, as a captain, that we could do with some changes. You should meet your partner.” The door slid open and Val’s new partner stepped in. Her annoyance at having to be partnered disappeared entirely, as she recognised the other twelve year old girl. It was her friend Elizabeth Somerset.
