Orion stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by objects. His eyes were closed. “Orion?” Ella asked. “What’s going on?” Orion’s eyes shot open. Everything dropped to the floor. ‘I’m sorry,” he said, then he smashed through a window and leapt out. “We’re two stories up,” Ella whispered. She ran to the window. Orion was on the ground, doubled over. “We need to help him,” she told Anthony. She pulled him by the arm down the two flights of stairs to the main floor, then they ran out the door and to Orion. She crouched down next to him. “Are you okay? What the hell is happening?” Orion stood up shakily and took a couple steps back. “Don’t-” he said. “Just-” he pressed his hands to his temples. “Go away. Just go away!” “Orion,” Anthony began warily. “You’re freaking us out. You’re sick, or injured or something. You need to go back to the hospital.” But Orion wasn’t listening. He was clutching his head again. He could barely hear his friends over the roar in his ears, a roar that was starting to turn into words. Finally, a voice hissed. Do you know how long I’ve waited for you to become a proper vessel? Suddenly, darkness snaked around Orion, unseen to anyone else. He was standing in a vast emptiness. In front of him was another person who looked exactly like him, but with black eyes and a cruel sneer. “What?” Orion asked out loud. “Who are you?” “Who are you talking to?” Ella asked. “Shut up,” Orion said. Who would have thought it takes this long to prepare a human body for possession? Honestly, it would have been so much better if you had just summoned me yourself. “Why do you need me?” The other Orion shrugged. I’ve gotten bored, I suppose. The age of magicians is long gone. The last time I was summoned- well, it was so long ago that humans have completely forgotten it. It’s been millennia since I’ve gotten to use my power. So I found my own host. “Me.” You. Close your eyes, Orion Blackwell. Let me take over. Orion started to protest, but the spirit,- or demon or whatever it was- was too strong. Orion couldn’t sense what was happening outside of his mind, but he could see the spirit move. “The world has changed a lot since I’ve last been out,” it said, using Orion’s voice. “I think the first thing I’ll do is… grow.”
