THUD! I woke up with a start, hearing something far, far away. What could it be? “Elsa, wake up!” I shook Elizabeth awake. “We should find out what’s happened.” Pulling on a dressing gown, I pulled Elizabeth out the common room hole. THUD! Again! Frantically, we tried to search for the origins of the noise, but then we heard sudden footsteps. “Students? Out of bed!” Filch’s wheezing voice seemed to be right near us. In a panic, I draped a cloak next to the hole over us, hoping that Filch would think we were a wrapped-up parcel or important and fragile covered thing. Sure enough, he walked straight past without even a glance at us, as if… we weren’t there at all. Pulling the hood down, Elizabeth noticed something. “Haze, look!” she whispered excitedly. “I think it’s an invisibility cloak!” My friend was right! I couldn’t see any further down than my neck, since I was wearing the Cloak! It was so cool! “Hey, there’s a note!” I spotted a piece of paper pinned to the hood. It read, ‘To H.M. You will need this. It’s yours.’ “Whoah,” I breathed. “This is mine?!” Elizabeth was as surprised as I was. “Come on,” she said. “Let’s find out who made that thud.” We searched all night long, until the pale yellow dawn light appeared. Reluctantly, we sloped back to the dorms to catch an hour of sleep before breakfast. That morning, in Charms (where we were doing Summoning Charms), Elizabeth and I told Emily and Daliyla everything, although we couldn’t tell Ruby. “Did you ever own anything like, maybe your mum or dad gave you?” asked Daliyla. “Then perhaps someone stole it, like Carina’s stuff, realised how valuable it is, felt guilty, and sent it back?” Biting my lip, I thought hard. “Wait….Dad gave me a parcel before I got on the train, before he…died,” my voice faltered. “Then, I didn’t open it, because I forgot the whole entire thing, so the thief could have easily stolen it! I remember Dad told me that it was a precious family heirloom.” “Demonstrate the Summoning Charm, MacMillan!” Flitwick’s squeaky voice jerked me out of my thoughts. I waved my wand, muttered “Accio!” and my book, which Flitwick was holding, soared over to me neatly. After a quick practice with everyone in the room, we scrambled out of Charms and out into the grounds, since it was break. Once we were outside, we heard a tidal of angry, confused, and annoyed voices. “Where’s my eagle quill? I swear it was in my bag!” “Who took my Cannons badge?” (This came from Ron Weasley, the red-haired boy who plays with Potter). “Hey! Somebody took my entire collection of Chocolate Frog cards!” It went on and on and on. I shared an anxious look with my friends. We were almost absolutely certain that the Thief stole all those things, too. Then, Emily nudged me and looked pointedly in one direction. There, I could see Olivia Ravenclaw and Draco (Emily’s brother) being led away by a tall boy whom I recognised as Abrowan Goldstein, a Slytherin fifth-year. Daliyla, Elizabeth, Emily and I glanced at each other. Then, without hesitation, we crept after them, both eager and terrified to find out what they were doing.
