Desdemona Aurelia Carson, she/her Call her Mona if you'd like, only her brother calls her Desi Age: 23 Desdemona is a girl that everybody likes at least a little bit- she's pretty, she's nice, she calls people "love" and means it. She has so many friends. She is always full of brightness. Her life wasn't always that way, though. She was born Gabrielle Aurelia Carver to a painfully average, God-fearing, suburban family. Her parents hardly gave her the time of day as they had 6 other, older children to take care of. They always looked at her a little bit disappointedly, as if she could never measure up to the impossibly high standards her older siblings had set with their massive success. One sister a doctor, a brother in a successful band, and four others on a path to greatness cast a large and dark shadow. Her parents had the full belief that in order for Desdemona, a girl with below-average grades and an erratic attention span, to get close to as successful or wealthy she would have to marry a respectable man with means. In other words, she would have to marry rich. Therefore, when in High School Mona realized she had no interest in any man, never mind a wealthy one that was possibly much older than her, she was determined to hide it from her church-going family. She asked a boy, Evan Fisher, out to homecoming and they dated for two years after that. While they came to be close, Mona never felt anything beyond friendship. She became a master at faking passion when he kissed her, but her mind always floated far from his lips. Early in her senior year, she became infatuated with an unlucky girl who had to move schools the year she was graduating by the name of Vela Diaz. At first, she forced herself to shove the feelings down, afraid her secret would be revealed. However, when Vela began to flirt with her, she found she couldn't resist. One day, her boyfriend caught the two of them kissing in a supply closet. Evan was angry, angrier than anyone had ever seen him. He pvnched Mona in the face, causing her nose to bleed and began to be@t her up badly until a teacher intervened. He told her family what he had seen, prompting them to kick her out of the house. She finished her senior year living at a friend's house until graduation, although she was relentlessly bullied by her classmates. The whispers behind closed doors became almost as unbearable as the constant teasing, fighting, and cruelty she faced from her classmates on the daily. The worst pain, though, was Vela who pretended Mona never existed. The two of them never spoke again. Mona was forced to find a new living situation when her friend went to college. It was a difficult time, working job after job until she could afford her own apartment. She went to community college to obtain a degree. She changed her name from Gabrielle to Desdemona, switching from an angel's name to a name meaning "ill-fated" that has ties to the devil (in response to her family's claiming she was a sinner) and she replaced her last name. She slowly built a strong group of friends she believes is her true family. The only sibling she still talks to is her older brother Michael. She was doing fairly well until she was kidnapped when leaving her job and taken to the high-tech facility she found herself trapped in, unable to escape. The endless hours she spend alone in her cell gave her the time to truly confront her feelings about what had happened in her past. She sometimes solely blamed herself for the incident, knowing it was wrong to cheat on Evan. Other times she became so angry at her family, the high schoolers who bullied her, Evan, and Vela that she screamed and punched the walls. In any case, that cell is where Desdemona's story truly starts.
