A dark shape flitted through the soaked pine trees ahead. Jinx stared hard, trying to make it out, but he couldn’t tell what it was… it was smaller than him, so it could be an apprentice… if it /was/ a cat. He narrowed his eyes. Through the lashing rain, the thing drew silently closer. Thunder shook the earth, a great tremendous roar that bellowed its disapproval. A blinding flash of lightning illuminated the sky, and… the thing. Jinx had not noticed her standing in front of him—it was too dark. She was a cat, with a black spotted pelt, long legs, a slender, graceful build, and haunting, penetrating, downright creepy ice blue eyes. Somewhere, a loon’s call sang, perfectly matching the moment. She gave him the feeling she was reading his mind for a few heartbeats, as though chips of ice had flown from her eyes and bored into his brain, picking out his thoughts and examining them. “Why are you here.” It wasn’t entirely a question, where Jinx had the choice of answering. It was a command. He took a deep breath. “Everpaw—” “Everfrost.” “Right, sorry. When was your ceremony?” “Don’t stall, Riddlepaw,” She hesitated. “…It was two sunsets ago. Vixenstar made me a warrior early.” “Congratulations! And I’m back to Jinx again.” Everfrost’s eyes widened. “You were exiled? That’s why you're here?” She slid her claws out and glared at him. “To take refuge from ShadowClan again and then leave m— leave as soon as ThunderClan realizes they needed you?” Jinx rolled his eyes, but he looked more sad than irritated. “Yes, I was exiled. My warrior ceremony was supposed to be almost a moon ago, but—” “But your biased leader stalled and postponed and rescheduled until you asked him about it and he used it as excuse to kick you out because he can’t accept you because you’re a past kittypet and past loner. He probably pulled the ‘StarClan wouldn’t approve’ card too. Right?” Now Jinx was definitely annoyed. “Yes, all of that, yes,” he looked around and said quietly, “I don’t know where I’ll go from here,” he admitted. “I just came here because…” Golden eyes met blue for a split second. Jinx tore his away guiltily, and Everfrost stiffened. “I going to have to take you to Vixenstar. You’re trespassing on ShadowClan territory.” “Of course. You must follow the warrior code.” Jinx’s words were polite but his voice was cold. He turned away from Everfrost, but not in time to miss the look of anguish on her face.
