Look all around you, What do you see? Is it a peaceful world For you and me? Whether yes or no The question still is posed Do we make it better For everyone we know? Do we make it better For all the world? Fight for all we care for Have our thoughts unfurled? So Act out, Act up (Act UP!) Spread the commotion We’ll get the word out somehow Through all our devotion Act out, Act up (Act UP!) And spread the word About all the flaws that need to be Overturned Wherever we go There’s always something new To do or learn The shots are never few Make your own opinion Sing it long and proud Let them hear our stories Bring your questions out Do we make it better For all the world? Fight for all we care for Have our thoughts unfurled? So Act out, Act up (Act UP!) Spread the commotion We’ll get the word out somehow Through all our devotion Act out, Act up (Act UP!) And spread the word About all the flaws that need to be Overturned Act out (Act OUT!), Act up (Act UP!) Spread the commotion We’ll get the word out somehow Through all our devotion Act out (Act OUT!), Act up (Act UP!) And spread the word About all the flaws that need to be Overturned Act out (Act OUT!), Act up (Act UP!) Spread the commotion We’ll get the word out somehow Through all our devotion Act out (Act OUT!), Act up (Act UP!) And spread the word About all the flaws that need to be Overturned
Another project for school! WAHOO! “Act UP!” was made in inspiration from the Act UP organization (actupny.org) and the chants they made during protests at the time of the AIDS pandemic. The song is meant to embody the optimism and uplifting chants during their protests. I had an idea from the beginning that the chanting would make its way into the chorus- and I somehow pulled it off. Act UP works to bring people together to advocate for changes they want. The song was meant to be like an anthem of sorts for the organization. During recent years, We as a society haven’t done the best. Many of the people in power aren’t listening to us as a community- Police have pepper sprayed people during peaceful protests, and there are many laws that are attempting to be put in place that cause disruptions, for instance if they seem clearly unconstitutional- and national conflicts are going too far. The song’s lyrics talk about how even if our world is peaceful, what about others? Should we protest? Would it even matter? In any case, “Act UP!” is overall a song about fighting for what you love and care about. I unfortunately had no access to quality equipment, so this was all done on my potato of a school computer and $40 bluetooth headphones. The vocals took at least three hours alone. Do I care? No, no I don’t.
