So for the last 6 months, I’ve been in kinda a reading slump, and these books were ones that really got me back into reading- as in staying up late, reading every free moment. The books listed are definitely a variety, there’s fantasy, sci-fi, romance, and some thriller. I would recommend these books for 12/13+, not because of the romance (it’s clean) but because some of these books are scarier or have heavier themes. Reviews and sorta summaries (?) below Enjoy! CRIER’S WAR Absolutely stunning sci-fi queer romance. Ayla and Crier, a human and something… more than human fight their own rebellions against Zulla, where Crier is princess and Ayla is considered little more than an animal. The world was unique, interesting, and well built. The characters were fully fleshed out (a thing i really look for) The plot really pulled me in from the first chapter-im a sci-fi/dystopia fan and this was perfect. The romance was slow-burn :D. FLOWERHEART Fun fantasy romance- A young witch is pushed back into a relationship with her estranged best friend, as her uncontrollable powers threaten everything she holds dear. Cute, but still deep and occasionally dark, with a strong female protagonist and messages about mental health and drug use. THIS WOVEN KINGDOM Rich with mythology, Mafi weaves a tale of a servant girl, heir to a long lost kingdom, and a prince raised to hate her kind. I’m on the second book of this series and i absolutely love every second of it- the plot twists, the forbidden romance, the rich world building . 5 stars. LUMARA TBH, i didn’t entirely love this book because the plot twist didn’t have enough explanation (?) but it’s definitely worth reading . Talia absolutely hates Mystics, but when she finds out her boyfriend is one, she reluctantly agrees to go to his family’s private island. After being accused of a terrible crime she is certain she did not commit, Talia discovers not everything is as it seems…even hers left. I thought the characters and magic system in this book were definitely top-tier, and the plot immediately grabbed my attention SLAY AHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK. About a teenage Black girl who creates an (amazing) video game centered around Black culture. When someone is murdered over the game, she suddenly faces the possibility of being exposed to the world. The characters are very complex and the video games is actually mind blowing. A great exploration of racism and unconscious bias. Would definitely reread. GOING DARK Not going to give anything away about the plot of this. You’ll just have to read it. ABSOLUTELY AMAZONG sort of psychological thriller that explores sexism and mental health. I HOPE YOURE LISTENING Delia, who secretly runs a true crime podcast faces the music when a kidnapping occurs in her very own town…and that kidnapping is linked to the abduction of her former best friend. Nail-biting, edge of your seat mystery that actually keeps you guessing the whole time. I absolutely loved this book and i was so scared at the end ;). THE KINDRED I actually read this book back in October but it’s SO GOOD. It’s sorta sci-fi fantasy, set in space where everyone’s mind is connected to their Kindred. Except the infamous Duke Felix’s Kindred is a lowly commoner, Joy. When the royal family is killed and Felix is blamed, he must escape with Joy’s help. This book was such a good example of a romance with a good plot too. THE SIREN Another amazing book from the author of the selection. :D Kahlen is a Siren, a beautiful girl who serves the Ocean by singing ships to their watery graves. Falling in love isn’t supposed to happen. This was such a sweet romance and the fantasy was well thought out. Sorta reminiscent of the little mermaid?
