Episode 1: The School Tournament “Are you paying attention, Mr. Tran?” His teacher asked, sternly. “Yes, yes, you are letting us play video games, right?” Malcolm asked, flipping a page on his light novel. The rest of the class giggled at Malcolm’s antics. Somehow, this immature pessimistic downer had found his way into becoming the class clown. Anyways, that doesn’t matter right now. Right now, I need to find some teammates. Jacob thought, making a fist and grinning. His teacher had set up a Militia tournament, a game that Jacob was already planning to go pro in. “Before you guys begin making teams, you should know that we’ll begin combining with the other class for this thing.” His teacher said, looking at all of them, “What a lame reward,” Malcolm murmured as he turned another page in his light novel. This Militia tournament was due to the school's high GPA, which was likely carried by Malcolm himself, along with a few other notable students. Jacob first went up to his friends. “Hey, you guys wanna-” “Sorry, Jacob, we already made a team of 5.” “I mean, there’s six of us, you understand right?” “Oh yeah! Of course!” Jacob said, smiling at them. Alright, so I need to get a team with people I don’t know? Sounds like a challenge. Good. I like challenges. Jacob thought to himself, confidently. “Hey Jacob~ I can join your team, I don’t know how to play though, so you’ll have to carry me!” Raylia said, smiling brightly at him. “Hey, if Raylia’s joining, then I’m joining too!” Wendy, Raylia’s best friend exclaimed. Jacob grinned brightly. “Sure! That’s great!” Alright! Two people left! Unfortunately, teams were building up quickly, and if Jacob couldn’t find two more people left, he wasn’t going to end up playing with a full team, or at all. Meanwhile, Malcolm looked at everyone’s antics over his light novel. “So?” The girl in front of him demanded. “Hmm?” Malcolm asked, looking up at her. “Do you wanna join or not?” She repeated impatiently. That’s Andrea, she’s one of the more popular girls in class. She probably filled her team with girls already. Malcolm thought to himself. “Hey, no way, hands off, we got Malcolm first!” Joseph said, glaring at Andrea. “I don’t play Militia.” Malcolm interrupted, guessing the reason they wanted him on their team was. “Oh…” “I mean…” “You don’t still want me, go get your friends,” Malcolm told them indifferently. He didn’t care about being abandoned. He didn’t care at all. Flashing images of his past flooded through his head. Not gonna think about it right now… Not gonna think about it. “Hey, Malcolm, wanna join my team?” Jacob asked. Jacob, is decently popular, relentlessly optimistic, and ah, there she is. Malcolm thought, spotting Raylia behind him. Wendy was right next to her, whispering something to her. “I don’t play Militia, if that’s what you’re wondering,” Malcolm said. Just because I don’t play first-person shooters doesn’t mean I play… Whatever this is. Malcolm thought disapprovingly. “That’s fine. I wasn’t thinking about that.” Jacob replied enthusiastically. Of course, you weren’t. Malcolm sighed internally. “Sure then,” Malcolm said, shrugging. “But if you want me, you’ll have to take William too.” Malcolm gestured to an overweight boy wearing glasses. William was an unpopular boy, whose only friend ended up being Malcolm. “Alright!” Jacob said, confidently. Man, what an optimist. Malcolm thought tiredly. Well, whatever. I’ll just enjoy the fact that we don’t have to do work right now. Malcolm thought, as Jacob went up to the teacher and announced his team.

This was based off of it, heavily, though it's more of a how Tolkien inspired Robert Jordan type of situation. Nonetheless, similarities should be expected from the start. I highly recommend you read Classmancers before reading Militia, and I love it https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/17266/classmancers-a-moba-esport-story
