When people are straight *cries* It was the same thing year after year in Redcrest. The same stores, neighborhoods, people, everything. Nobody really ever left once they moved here, you just can’t forget the peacefulness of a small familiar town. Charlie was one of those people who had lived here their entire life. With the same stores, neighborhoods, and people. Year after year. He was one of those people who screamed through the street with their friends. One of the people that stayed out until it was dark. One of those people who liked things to stay the same. Charlie expected it all to stay the same the day that mysterious pretty boy showed up. “Okay class!” Mr. Adler directed the class's attention to the front of the room, “This is August, he will be your new homeroom classmate.” Charlie didn’t register any of what Mr. Adler had been saying. This new and very mysterious boy had Charlie’s full and complete attention. “Whatcha’ looking at?” Delilah whispered, startling Charlie from his thoughts. “NOTHING, absolutely nothing! Definitely not looking at some cute new kid, no…” Charlie’s face turned bright red, and he trailed off at the end of his sentence, eyes flitting back to the new boy. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw Delilah and Casey muttering to themselves. Then they both looked at each other, then him and said in unisine, “Be his school guide!” Charlie didn’t answer because Delilah grabbed his arm and practically flung it in the air. He didn’t put his hand down because at that moment Mr. Adler called on him, clearly not seeing that this was all an elaborate plan by Casey and Delilah. “Ms. Ashley has volunteered to be your school guide, which, what a coincidence you both have the same classes.” Mr. Adler was the most transphobic teacher Charlie had ever had, and Mr. Adler insisted on calling him by his old name. Ashley. His female name, the one he no longer identified with. But it didn’t matter now, August was walking over to him as the bell rang. “Good luck!” Casey and Delilah looped arms and walked to their next class. “Hi…” Charlie said as he tried not to stare. The boy had a mop of dark brown hair on his head that covered some of his left eye. It looked really soft to Charlie. “So? Where is our next class, Ashley? That is your name, right?” August was looking at him with one dark chocolate eye and one almost mint colored eye. “Oh, it’s Charlie. I’m trans, I use he/him pronouns. Yeah…” Charlie trailed off, waiting for the rejection to come, but it didn’t. “Oh, cool.” August said as the two finally made their way out of the classroom. Luckily the passing period was six minutes long, otherwise the kids on the other end of the building would be very tardy. “Cool.”
