The instructions for game play are provided "in game". This game also has a prologue that I have added to provide a story behind the game as well as to introduce the role of the player. Press 'Z' to bypass the prologue then press 'C' to insert a coin. Two levels of difficulty are available to adjust the challenge according to the player's skills and abilities.
This is a recreation of the classic 1978 Space Invaders arcade game manufactured by Taito licensed and adapted by Midway. A large number of costumes were necessary to overcome limitations of Scratch due to the game having a background image. Only a very small set of costumes would be required for a monochrome background however the moon background from the original arcade game adds a nostalgic effect that I felt was crucial to recreating the authenticity of the original arcade experience. 1978 Classic Space Invaders" is my first Scratch project that began one weekend as I found myself with a few extra hours to begin exploring hobbies again. My only goal was have a little fun learning to perform a simple animation. One challenge led to the next and before I knew it, the simple animation of one invader became a hobby and turned into an obsession to see how close to the original arcade game I could make it. Once the game reached a certain point, I spent as much time getting caught up in the game as developing it. I find myself playing this game several times a week. First I would like to thank MIT for making Scratch. This project has been a lot of fun and the platform enabled me to explore and learn new skills as well as brush up on concepts and skills that have been collecting dust for quite some time. Secondly I would like to thank Tomohiro Nishikado whose genius was not only responsible for the original Space Invaders arcade games, but who was also an inspiration to millions of dreamers around the world who went on to create a new world of gaming. With that said, I hope you enjoy playing Space Invaders as much as I enjoyed making it. Blast'em!!!
