STARTED Year: 1710 2/2 HISTORY: In the early 18th century, Europe was engulfed in two major conflicts: the Great Northern War and the War of the Spanish Succession. The Great Northern War (1700-1721) involved a coalition of countries, including Russia, Poland-Lithuania, and Denmark-Norway, that sought to challenge Sweden's dominance in Northern Europe. The conflict was driven by territorial ambitions and the desire to control key regions around the Baltic Sea. Simultaneously, the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) arose after the death of the childless Charles II of Spain. This war was centered on who would inherit the Spanish throne, with major European powers supporting either the House of Bourbon or the House of Habsburg. The outcome of this succession crisis would shape the political landscape of Europe for years to come. These two wars significantly influenced the balance of power in Europe, setting the stage for future geopolitical developments.
