If you want to power up the ball, hold your mouse when moving the pad, Risk it to win or stay stealthy and wait for the AI to fail? PST..... There's a big chance of winning if you hit the ball with the top or bottom of your pad. The ball will go back and forth and either get flinged to your opponent or yourself. Again, Do you really want to risk it??? If you're bored but don't want to lose, you can play with the balls in menu screen, try drag them around or touch them with your mouse pointer!!
