This is just a small story, so sit back and relax.
For you newer Nintendo fans, I'll explain the actual L is real 2401 myth. Super Mario 64 was released in June of 1996. It was one of the first good looking 3d games, and fans were amazed at the new environment. But there was a huge part of the game that was notably absent. Luigi. You see, there was a hallway in the castle that led to the courtyard in the back. In the center of the courtyard was a statue with a star on it. Also, a plaque laid on the base of it. Since the N64(the console used to play SM64) was released in 1996, it didn't have the greatest graphics. Therefore, it was hard to read what was on the plaque. There were two famous interpretations of what the words said. The first one said "Eternal Star." That makes sense, because there is a star on the statue. The second one, however, is way more interesting. Some thought it read "L is real 2401." People determined this to be a hint that Luigi was in the game and could be unlocked somehow. As for the "2401" part, that got a bit trickier. People thought that it could refer to 2/4/2001. This doesn't make sense, though. First of all, it was thought that 2/4/2001 was the American release date for the first Paper Mario game and featured Luigi, but it is actually 2/5/2001. Second, how would Nintendo know the release date of a game that came out years later from SM64? Another interesting but somewhat creepy thing that relates to 2401 is that files for Luigi in the game were found 24 years and 1 month after the release of SM64(tell me in the comments, coincidence or not?). One last thing to note about the myth is that the same texture on the plaque was also used in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time(I think, I could be wrong). #mario #story #sm64
