There’s just somethings that Foamkit can’t deny he has. A folded ear, for example. Why does he have it? Why not lengthened teeth like his sister? Some of these are unanswerable, yet the stones that really hit him are his own thoughts - the ones about why he was even found by Finchwatcher in the first place? All will be reveal, with undeniable details… ・゚:*࿔❀004… ❝UNDENIABLE DETAILS❞ research and trivia… ༄Research ㅤ★ folded ear - what it is (with the assumption that Foamkit is a part scottish fold breed as well as other reasoning, that will be applied to all research) The Scottish Fold breed of cat has a genetic mutation that affects the development of cartilage. The most obvious outward manifestation of this is making the ear cartilage fold so the ears bend forward, giving the cat its characteristic appearance. Unfortunately, the genetic defect that causes abnormality of the ear cartilage also causes severe abnormalities of the cartilage of bones – there will be defective bone development and severe bone and cartilage abnormalities in all cats with folded ears. This is known as osteochondrodysplasia – a general term for a disorder of the development of bone and cartilage. These bone and cartilage abnormalities lead to severe and painful arthritis. Osteochondrodysplasia is a developmental abnormality that affects cartilage throughout the body. It is this that causes the abnormal ear shape in Scottish fold cats. Its effects in other parts of the body, especially the limb bones, are much more serious, causing severe distortion of limb bone shapes and severe arthritis. The disease can be apparent in animals as young as 7 weeks and persists throughout life. It causes crippling, lameness and serious chronic pain. There is no cure. Cessation of breeding from any cats with folded ear/s would eliminate this condition very promptly. In all homozygous folded-eared cats this condition causes deformities and progressive joint disease leading to crippling disability associated with significant pain. Many affected cats are euthanized earlier in life due to the profound effects of this disease. In some heterozygous individuals the condition may be very mild but in others there can be significant joint disease and deformity leading to pain and disability. All homozygous cats are severely affected. All heterozygous individuals are affected but to varying degrees (Malik et al 1999, Chang et al 2007). Due to Foamkit’s parents MAYBE NOT being a scottish fold, or being affected with osteochondrodysplasia at all, extending to Ivorykit, i would only assume that Fosm is a heterozygous affected individual, which would lead to him having mild or medium level effects from this. keep this in mind going forward. Another possibility is Aural Hematoma This is caused by trauma, typically from scratching, head shaking, or fights. The trauma causes blood vessels inside the ear pinna to rupture, and the area will form a pocket of blood on the inside. These can be painful to the touch, and the weight of the swollen pinna will cause it to droop forward. ㅤ★ folded ear - effects on character Due to having a pretty much 100% chance of being affected as a heterozygous individual with osteochondrodysplasia, Foam’s symptoms will be really mild, not as disastrous as stated in the “what it is” part of this application. however it will still be apparent, and it'll get worse later in his life. It'll be minor when he's young. 0-20 is an estimate. at most he’ll feel sore in his joints if he overworks himself, not the next day like what usually happens, it’ll be immediate. 30-50 moons, if he runs too much, or fights/trains for a little too long, his joints won’t just be sore by the end of it, they’ll actually sting this time, which means he would need to take more breaks than the average cat. At 60-100 moons, walking for too long will cause him moderate stinging, more then the mild that happened prior, and heavy soreness. while elders usually get some sort of joint pain due to them getting older, with Foam, by his “elder age” he’d feel much more pain then the average elder and would need to take many more breaks than average, Now, just because Foam has these symptoms does NOT mean I think he belongs in the medicine den or the elders den early. That is not what Foam would want at. all. Although Foam may be disabled, it is in his nature to keep striving no matter what. even as he gets older that will not stop him from trying his very best, and even harder than any other. I believe sticking disabled characters in the elders den or medicine den just because they may have certain issues that characters without that disability don’t have is inherently ableist. So Foam will choose to stay training as a warrior throughout his life. This is fairly similar with Aural Hematoma, although the pain would mostly form in the ear.
