I don't know about you, but Hestu is probably one of my favorite characters in Zelda BotW. (And ToTK I'm pretty sure he comes back in that one :)) But, like, what is he? He could be a Korok, except in a lot of his, like, speaking I feel like he addresses himself differently from the Korok's, which I'm pretty sure he calls the Children of the forest. Also, he is huge. When you look it up it says that he is a Korok, but I feel like that doesn't really make sense? He's big, like a tree! (He also looks like broccoli lol) Wich reminds me of the Deku tree, but the Deku tree it, like, huge and doesn't have the cute stripe patterns that Korok's and Hestu have, (Wich once again points to him being a Korok) But it does say that the Deku tree it his surrogate grandfather, wich at first made me think they were related. But the thing is, a surrogate grandfather isn't related to the grandchild by blood, it's more like an emotional thing, or someone who takes the place of Grandfather in their life. So this is very confusing. Also, the Korok's steal Hestu's seeds from his maraca's, wich means he can't do magic unless we find him. Why do the Korok's do this? It say's it's a big prank, but is it? Also, why can Hestu do magic? A giant maybe-Korok-thing with magic maracas? Well I was thinking maybe the Deku tree can do magic, but...he kind of just protects koroks. So I was thinking maybe Hestu's magic powers have some sort of relation to the Deku tree, but they don't. So I'm thinking maybe this is just a cool trick he picked up just for the sake of the game, by making it a little better when your weapon slots get upgraded and to give us an adorable charector who is, like, three times our size. Also, how are Korok's born? Well I looked it up, and there were several awnsers but the one that seemed the best/most consistent was that Korok's are born from the Deku tree's seeds, and therefore are all technically his children. But...Hestu isn't technically related to the Deku tree, as he is his surrogate grandfather, which means their not related by blood (Or sap? Is that what trees have instead of blood?) So I've been thinking. There's an island in the game near Hyrule castle, and a few other places, with the remaind of huge-HUGE-trees, wich suggests there may have been other Deku tree's, or other large tree's LIKE the Deku tree. We know that everyone, probably even Korok's, are technically all somewhat related. If you belueve in Christianity like I do, everyone came from Adam and Eve, and Noah. And even if you aren't Christian, you probably still believe that they were all technically related. So all the Korok's are probably related, somehow, which means that (Spoiler) There can be Korok's that aren't related to the great Deku tree. But, Potato, aren't Korok's born from the Deku tree's seeds? Well do you remember me mentioning that there are remains of other trees in Hyrule? What if those other trees are where Hestu came from, and because they weren't shrouded in the Lost woods where no monsters could get to they were cut down during the calamity. But why are Korok's and Hestu descendants of trees, that are like planted in the ground? So Korok's are called Children of the forest, implying they are...children. Hestu does not adress himself as a child of the forest, even though he is a Korok. So we know that the Deku tree is at least 100 years old, but there's a shrine built next to him so he's probably much older than that because the Sheikah were able to discover him, and build a shrine there. The thing is, the shrines were created 10,000 years prior to BotW. So, the Deku tree is probably over 10,000 years old. So, from tiny Korok to great Deku it kind of makes sense that it took the Deku tree 10,000 years to become so big. So, here's the entire theory. Hestu was a little Korok 100 years ago, before the Calamity started. He was born from the Deku trees on the island across from Hyrule castle, so he is related to the Deku tree but the family line goes very, very far back, as the trees on Hyrule are smaller and therefore younger than the Deku tree, so they have had time to develop but aren't quite as old as the Deku tree. When the calamity happened, the other large trees were cut down, and Hestu (Along with his maracas) Was forced to take refuge in the lost woods, where he created a tight bond with the Deku tree. Over time, younger and more foolish Korok's decided to wander into the world, just to be unalived. But Hestu, because he was smart and had a tight bond with the Deku tree, decided to stay. And 100 years later, the Deku tree knew Link was to arise soon, and was also worried about his age-He was 10,000 years old, and surely didn't have much longer. With all the other Deku trees gone, he was worried about who would protect the younger Korok's, as that was his job since the Calamity started. So he sent Hestu out into the world, as he was at least five times as tall as the other Korok's and could probably fend for himself.(+)
So, he figured Hestu could help Link with his magic once he awoke, and also prepare himself to become the next great Deku tree. So he sent some of the larger or smarter and tougher Korok's out into the world aswell. with their incredible hiding skills and brains. As a trial to test Hestu's smarts, the Korok's took all of his seeds from his maracas. The thing is, the Korok's were a little smarter than the Deku tree. The Deku expected Hestu to find all the seeds himself, but the Korok's figured he would ask for help from most likely a hylian, so they created small trials that would be a lot more likely to be done by a hylian, such as shooting balloons. I also have a theory about Hestu's seeds and exactly where Korok's come from, wich I have not done research for though. But what if Hestu's seeds come from his dead parents, and he collected the seeds from the dead bodies in hopes of being able to grow them, but sadly weren't developed enough to grow, so he carries them around with him, and maybe for some reason they have magic properties wich is why he uses them in his maracas and is where he gets his magic from and spent the 100 years learning how to use it. As for exactly how Korok's are born, in the korok forest I feel like there's these pea pod looking plants that are pretty large that you can't cut with a sword, so what is those are unborn koroks? But yeah, that is just a theory (A game theory! Hehe I miss Mat Pat) I have done some research but not tons such as going through Hestu's diologue or diologue related to Hestu, and of course I understand there's tons of other Zelda games and a lot of them are connected, so this is a theory and what I am thinking as for where Hestu came from but like don't take my word because this si just an idea :) Hope you enjoyed! Art by me :D So I checked and the pea pod things in the korok forest emit light so NOT baby Koroks but like there’s plenty of plants…still think this it IT!
