It probably weighed 800 kg (1760 lbs) (Arctodus simus) and lived in North America. Proportionately, its legs were short compared to its body, and its small back exaggerated this. Its South American cousins had a diet similar to modern bears, being omnivores. However, in North America, they were mostly carnivores due to the abundant supply of meat, especially fish.
