Okay but um Magic in this universe is part of you. It's not a tool or something you acquire. It's an ancient thing Like the Lines in Nottera all were blessed by the daughters of Nott. A group of sorceresses that controlled the darker aspects of things. Like Night and Death and Dragons. Most people have families that are decent from those Lines. Even Emiko has been gifted with these powers. But since magic is a part of you, you are taught to separate it into two sections. The one Emiko usually uses is from stored magic that her body reuses. If you use the magic too fast or too much and burn through the storage it affects you and starts pulling from the other section of Magic. The Pure unbridled magic, This Magic is what we see Emiko use in book two when healing Tae Ki. The more you use magic the more it affects you. This will be explained in a later chapter.
