Telenore let out a deep, sleepy sigh as she sat up, then rubbed her eyes to get a clear picture of her environment. She took a moment to listen to loud snores that came from a sleeping Rosemary, whose back leant against the sofa rear. Telenore lifted herself off the couch very weakly and stood unstably. Her shoulders hung low, and her back was arched; she had not slept long and enough, and somehow, she felt even more exhausted than before she had slept anyway. Telenore crept across the room with her heavy head hung low. Her steps barely covered much distance, but — of course — she was gradually getting closer and closer to a window in the room she was in — whichever room it was. Once Telenore reached the window, she observed the moon. Its position in the sky suggested sometime around midnight, and that was just peachy; Telenore was planning to escape tonight, and she didn't want anyone to get in the way of that. Telenore looked back at Rosemary and made sure she was in a deep sleep. Obviously, Rosemary was. She was snoring so loudly there was no way she'd hear anything over it, so Telenore believed that surely this meant just the sound of two squeaking boots wouldn't wake Rosemary. When Telenore felt that she was set, she opened the front door very slowly, and so the door squealed like it was offended at being touched. It irritated Telenore, but she didn't care about whether it irritated /her/ or not, she was just hoping the noise wouldn't reach the ears of a specific someone. The creaking was truly horrible and loud, and so Telenore only pushed the door far enough for her to at least be able to squeeze through if she walked sideways. And so, she slid out the narrow space — facing sideways — very stealthily. "Phew." Telenore sighed in relief. Telenore shut the door behind her and took off. She took in her surroundings as she walked outside. Telenore's environment, dark and quiet, really gave off quite an eerie vibe. Telenore’s eyes darted all around. She was getting scared, but she wasn’t letting that stop her. She collected herself, fists balled, gaze sharp, back straight. She must’ve looked bold, she thought, but from the inside she would be heard shrieking in terror. "I shouldn't worry too much. This hopefully won't be that hard. I just have to find a blindingly-bright...hole that really stands out. I go through it, and I'll be back where I belong." She told herself. This was going smoothly. Telenore built up a hint of confidence that she’d be out tonight, but she was still quite unsure. She gripped her scythe like a child hugs his mother and stayed on the lookout. The streets remained quiet and soundless. They were quiet for a long time. A bit too quiet, actually. The silence was pleasant, but unnerving as well, for now the sound of a mere whisper would be amplified by a hundred times. And then as Telenore began to let go of her guard, a breath was delivered to her ears, then it said, “Hullo!” [*]
[*] Telenore’s nerves snapped to the sound so sudden and unforeseen, and then after a gasp so fast, her metal-hard boots pounded at the cobblestone beneath her feet when she jumped around. “TAKE ONE MORE STEP, AND YOU CAN ONLY WISH TO SEE THE LIGHT OF TOMORROW!” Telenore screamed somewhat courageously. A figure — only to the length of Telenore's waist — emerged from the darkness and into the light. Fine, black hair, a white daisy pinned in, a dusty rose nightgown reaching down to a funny pair of white, fluffy bunny slippers. Such were the features of a little girl, of which quite attracted Telenore’s attention. “Hewo, weird lady!” The girl giggled. “Ah! A little hairy goblin! It can talk, too!” Telenore exclaimed peevishly. The little girl laughed and said, “Silly you! I’m not a goblin; I’m Jade! I’m four!” Telenore returned the girl’s optimism with a dumbfounded glare as she processed the fast words, then took a breath, and after two blinks replied, “Okay, Jade. I’ll be on my way now.” This last she said as she began to move on. Jade followed eagerly and got rambling soon enough. “Where you goin?” Jade hopped. Telenore kept walking and showed no response but a mere glance down at her. “What you holdin...?” Jade asked enviously as she folded her fingers in and out. Suddenly, Telenore noticed Jade was slowly reaching for her scythe, so Telenore slowly moved it farther and farther away until it was in her other hand. Jade saw she was being ignored, and she didn't take that very nicely. She had to think of some way to get Telenore's attention. She tried waving her arms around. It didn't work. She let out a screech but that only made Telenore's heart jump and that was all. Then she opened her mouth wide but was immediately interrupted. "Jade! Let's play..." Telenore trailed off, knelt down to Jade's ear, looked both ways, then whispered, "The silent game! Eh, eh?" She encouraged, nudging Jade with her elbow. But Jade smiled and shook her head quickly, and a strand of curls slapped Telenore's face as she did. Telenore squinted before she pulled her head aback to avoid another hit, but that let Jade see this as an opportunity for attention and walked closer, swinging her hair rapidly at Telenore's face. Telenore stood up to avoid anymore of this and right after that she stomped furiously with a roar. "THAT IS IT!" Telenore snapped. As soon as she did, Jade gasped quietly and grew silent and motionless. "You want to play, don't you?!" Telenore shouted. "Let us play, then!" Telenore yanked Jade's daisy out her hair and threw it far, and Jade could only watch the daisy hurtle in the sky and spin to the floor with clear shock and disbelief in her eyes. Jade got so upset and spun around swiftly on her heel to face Telenore once more. She took in a breath of rage and all that was left was to search for a pair of Telenore eyes to stare into and scream… ...but when she searched... ...she never found any.
