Scientific name: Hastulingua spicatipedes Alias: Sand Spiker Niche: Predator Evolved from: Hastalingua cheimarroi Description: Sand Spikers are whipologs closely related to mosquitofish that forego their external tongue-like digestive tracts and parasitic lifestyles in favor of ambush predation. They blend in with the sand (and the water) to aid them in sneaking up to and impaling their prey with their now spiked claws. In long pursuits they are significantly less adapted, however. Due to their non-streamlined and heavy legs they can easily be outrun by most other creatures, along with the fact that they are small enough that their prey could seriously injure them if they don't get the drop on them, they are only effective hunters when ambushing. Sand Spikers live in tight-knit packs of around 3-6 individuals, but hunt alone. After getting a kill, they bring the fresh meal back to the nest (which is usually dug out in the sand) for the young to eat. Their communication and echolocation abilities are even more complex than the mosquitofishes', making them by far the most intelligent life on Typhon so far. Because of their harsh lifestyle, Sand Spikers are widespread, but have low population density.
