Of course, I don't expect you to join for free as such, everyone who joins and agrees to allow their character the option to be selected to fight will get free art! Joining will automatically get you a drawing like the one you'll find if you click the project! To get a shaded drawing or one with a background, you will have to volunteer your character to the front lines, aka guaranteeing that they will fight and possibly die if we do end up in a battle.
