Some smugglers sent him to get the mythical Purple Crystal, a gem said to have extreme powers. However, he was transformed into a Meowth while handling the crystal. He decided to go on the side of Pokémon. Charm thought he was met to be transformed into a Meowth. But honestly, the smugglers just wanted him gone.
