Chapter 14 The Calm Before the Storm --------------------------------------------------------- The morning air was crisp as I made my way to the barn, the soft crunch of snow under my boots echoing in the stillness. Wispy Willows Barn was already alive with energy; Cassidy was organizing the training schedule, Tommy was brushing his horse, and Lila was preparing to practice her jumps. I felt a rush of excitement at the thought of our upcoming competition, but the shadowy figure from the previous evening lingered in my mind like a stubborn cloud. “Hey, Meghan!” Cassidy called, her voice bright against the chill. “You ready for today?” “Ready as I’ll ever be!” I replied, forcing a smile as I approached her. “Good! I think we should start with some groundwork before we hit the jumps. It’ll help Mystery and you get in sync,” she suggested, her enthusiasm contagious. As we worked with our horses, I focused on building a stronger connection with Mystery. He was more than just a horse to me; he was my partner, and I needed him to trust me as much as I trusted him. The rhythm of our movements felt right, and I began to feel that familiar thrill of possibility coursing through me. After a solid morning of practice, we gathered in the barn for a quick lunch. The atmosphere was buoyant, and we joked about our favorite riding blunders, laughter filling the space. “Did you hear about Olivia’s new trainer?” Tommy asked, leaning against a stall. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. “Yeah, I heard he’s tough. I wonder what that means for our practices.” “Probably more work for us,” Lila chimed in, a glint of mischief in her eyes. “But maybe he’ll push us to be better!” Just as the conversation shifted back to lighter topics, I noticed Cassidy’s gaze drifting towards the entrance of the barn, her expression shifting. “What’s wrong?” I asked, following her gaze. A tall figure stood outside, clad in dark riding gear, an imposing presence that sent a chill through me. As he stepped into the light, I recognized him as the new trainer: a rugged man with sharp features and a no-nonsense demeanor. “Who’s that?” I whispered to Cassidy. “Must be him,” she replied, eyes wide. The trainer approached with an air of confidence, and everyone fell silent. He surveyed us for a moment before speaking, his voice deep and authoritative. “I’m Coach Reid. I’ll be working with you all from now on.” “Great,” I muttered under my breath, anxiety bubbling beneath my excitement. “Competition is approaching fast,” Coach Reid continued. “I expect dedication, discipline, and hard work. If you want to succeed, you’ll need to push yourselves beyond what you think you’re capable of. Understand?” We all nodded, a mixture of determination and apprehension in the air. “Alright then,” he said, his eyes scanning our group. “Let’s get started. I want to see where each of you stands today. Meet me at the arena in ten minutes.” As we made our way to the arena, my heart raced. This was it—the real test was about to begin. I glanced at Cassidy, who gave me an encouraging nod. I could feel the weight of her belief in me, and it grounded me. In the arena, Coach Reid put us through a rigorous set of drills. He challenged us, pushing our limits with every exercise. The sweat dripped down my forehead as I focused on Mystery, feeling the strain of the training but also the exhilaration of improvement. Halfway through the session, Coach Reid called me out. “Meghan, let’s see you and Mystery tackle those jumps. Show me what you’ve got.” I took a deep breath, channeling every ounce of confidence I had. As I guided Mystery towards the first jump, I felt the familiar rush of adrenaline. We soared over it, landing gracefully, and I couldn’t help but smile. “Good! Again!” Coach Reid shouted, his voice booming across the arena. I repeated the jump, feeling the bond with Mystery strengthen with each leap. I was in the zone, lost in the rhythm of our movements. But as I landed from the last jump, I caught a glimpse of Olivia standing at the edge of the arena, arms crossed and a smirk on her face. My heart sank. I could feel her watching, evaluating. The training session continued, but the weight of Olivia’s presence lingered in the back of my mind. What was she thinking? Would she find a way to undermine our efforts? As we wrapped up for the day, my friends gathered around me, excitement in their eyes. “You were amazing, Meghan!” Cassidy exclaimed. “Thanks, but I can’t shake the feeling that this is just the beginning of something bigger,” I said, glancing back at Olivia, who was still watching us, her expression unreadable.
“Whatever happens, we face it together,” Tommy reminded us, echoing our earlier pact. As we headed back to the barn, I felt the thrill of competition brewing within me. I knew we had challenges ahead, both in our training and in facing Olivia. But with my friends by my side, I was ready to confront whatever lay ahead. The journey was just beginning, and I was determined to make it count.
