What is kandi? Kandi is a kind of accessory, which is most commonly bracelets made out of pony beads. However, there are many people who make kandi that isn’t a bracelet, such as belts, belt chains, necklaces,or even things such as shirts, skirts and hats! Kandi started in the EDM community, then spread to the rave community, then the scene community, and then many other communities. There are also a good few kandi subcultures, such as how Taylor Swift fans trade friendship bracelets. While kandi and the Taylor Swift friendship bracelets are very different, both in terms of what they’re made of and how you trade them, they still both have the same meaning;to spread love and kindness with other through a shared hobby or interest. The kandi community is very inclusive. Many people in the community often help each other find alternate ways to make kandi, such as using certain string,or using a knitting needle so the string doesn’t fray,or finding new ways to wear kandi for people who have sensory issues. Many people outside of the kandi community assume that kandi is just some bracelets, but it’s so much more than that. There is an acronym that commonly goes with kandi, which is PLUR.It stands for peace, love, unity and respect.Kandi also commonly represents family and friends. I sometimes like to joke that kandi is like having friendship bracelets with a bunch of strangers, but that’s more or less what kandi is.The kandi community is a very tight-knit community. So while you may not know everyone personally,it still feels like everyone’s your friend. This may also be true because of how generally friendly the community is.
