It was discovered in Argentina and lived during the Early to Mid Miocene. Its taxonomy is debated; it is either a cariamiform, typically a phorusrhacid (terror bird), or an anserimorph. It probably weighed between 350 and 400 kilograms (770 and 880 lbs) or 319 to 350 kilograms (703 to 772 lbs), with an assumed height of 280 centimeters (9.2 ft). It’s not clear what diet Brontornis had; it could have been a carnivore using its sharp beak, but it also could have been a herbivore. This uncertainty exists because we don’t have many skull fragments.
