This is for a school project. Below I have the notes for this presentation. Random Scratchers who stumble across this will want to understand what's going on, and it's convenient for my notes to be here so I can go over them while looking at my slides. ███████████████ ANGRY FIRE AND GOALS Here are the main characters of today's Global Goals presentation. I will be explaining why they look at each other with such hatred. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ WHY DO WE CARE? Wildfires are natural and help out, right? Yes, but the current situation is really going overboard with "helping." Here we have a list of some prominent concerns. - The fires are contributing to global warming. - They are bringing us more bad health than we're designed to take. - The flames themselves are highly destructive, burning down the habitats of both humans and animals. - A lot of money is being spent on and because of these fires. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ GLOBAL GOAL TARGETS These are some of the Global Goals' targets most relevant to this topic. Since you probably haven't memorized all of them by numbers and tiny, pixelated images, they will be gone over in more detail throughout the presentation. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ FIRES ARE MASTERS OF POLLUTION - Wildfires produce vast amounts of smoke very quickly. - Smoke can travel thousands of kilometers. - Excessive carbon dioxide causes ocean acidification. --> Oceans take billions of tons of pollutants from the air, but that's not all good. --> Problems for water-dwelling species • Shellfish can't easily make and keep their shells. • Coral reefs are eaten away by the water they're in. --> Disruption in food supply for humans • By extension, fewer jobs will be available. • Over a billion people rely heavily on fish or protein. --> Disruption in food supply for animals • Animals that live on those most vulnerable to ocean acidification won't have food to eat. - The polluted air also causes health problems for us. --> Heart disease, lung cancer, brain cancer, etc. --> At risk are the young, old, pregnant, outdoor workers, and those with heart or lung disease. --> One week of raging wildfires in June of 2023 was estimated to cost the Canadian healthcare system $1.2 billion. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TARGETS 14.3 AND 3.9 TARGETS 15.5, 15.1, AND 14.2 That covered at least a bit from each of these: Ocean acidification; illness from pollutants; and generally keeping habitats, ecosystems, and life around. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ DESERTIFICATION IS COMING TOO Desertification, if you didn't know, is essentially non-desert becoming desert. Though typically associated with dry regions, it can affect many more types of places with the right conditions. Even the Amazon region has been known to fall victim to it due to human interference. Results of desertification include the following: - Disruption in water supply - Flooding - Destruction of vegetation - Loss of land for farming • Less food being generated - Shortage of wood as fuel - Shifts in the species and even types of plants present in the area - Habitats being destroyed The increasing number and severity of wildfires has driven up the risk of Canada suffering desertification, particularly in the prairies. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ CONCLUSION And so I conclude: All the extra fire is, to put it in a highly simplified and very understating manner, not exactly great. ███████████████ SOURCES https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/insight/understanding-ocean-acidification https://climateinstitute.ca/news/fact-sheet-wildfires/ https://www.globalgoals.org/ https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/58221 https://www.fraserinstitute.org/blogs/more-money-from-ottawa-wont-solve-canadas-health-care-woes https://thelocal.to/education-toronto-district-school-board-funding/
