Air Canada Flight 143, also known as the "Gimli Glider," was a flight from Montreal to Edmonton on July 23, 1983, that experienced a fuel shortage mid-flight. The Boeing 767 ran out of fuel due to a series of errors involving incorrect fueling, and the crew was forced to glide the aircraft to an emergency landing at Gimli Industrial Park, a former military base in Manitoba. The plane had been incorrectly fueled due to a conversion error between metric and imperial units, leading to the fuel tank being underfilled. The flight crew, Captain Robert Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal, managed to glide the aircraft for over 30 minutes without engine power. Despite the challenge of landing with no power and a limited glide range, they successfully landed the plane with no loss of life. Remarkably, no one was seriously injured, and the incident is considered a remarkable example of pilot skill and quick thinking. The event gained international attention and later became a case study in aviation safety.
