Use the Left & Right keys to scroll between the 'slides' of Character Resprites -Commentary on each unique slide- Slides 1 & 2- Just a collection of the main sprites for the heroes and villains of the game, for more specific commentary go to the next few slides. Slide 3- The in-game palettes for different level types/enemy variations, the next slide is more visible for all of the enemies. Slide 4- The Enemies compared with the official and my version, These commentaries are in the order you see them in. Goomba- I really, really wanted to make the mouth work, and doing so made a lot less room for the eyes, so that's why they look a little silly, I actually really like how the face came out though, the silliness adds to the charm for me. I kept their iconic 1 foot in the air flipping walk animation intact, but tried to make the pose more interesting, probably wouldn't look as readable in gameplay as Nintendo's, but I still like it. Buzzy Beetle- I wanted to make them have both a more readable silhouette as well as a more intimidating design, because I thought the original looked kinda dumb. Blooper- One of my biggest changes, it's kind of jarring how much the modern design changed from the original, being a lot less realistic. I aimed to go more modern with this one and gave it a black line to both further utilize the black in the palette and separate it from the blue underwater background in-game. One of the ones where anti-aliasing was heavily utilized. (I love anti-aliasing if you couldn't tell) Bullet Bill- This one is a little hard to notice if not side by side, not much was changed, just tried to make a stronger design with sharper shapes. Koopa Troopa- This one was a doozy and I'm still not entirely happy with it... I wanted to make them stand upright, but the only way to make that fit with the original hitbox would be to give it a weird slouch, so I instead went for the crawling version. (I tried to make these game-accurate, accounting for hitbox sizes, reused assets, mirrored sides, palettes, etc, although I can't promise I achieved this goal for every sprite, I'm not super knowledgeable on the specifics.) Winged Koopa Troopa- pretty easy, just slapped some wings on, although I don't like the final results, look more like some weird feathers to me.. Hammer Bro.- One of my more major renovations, I tried to give him his modern design while also giving him a more unique pose. Bowser- I really am not a huge fan of the classic Bowser sprite, he just looks too silly to be any kind of menacing for a final boss, with his big toothy grin, and I didn't really feel his box-art design was iconic enough or even really looked good at all, so I went for his modern design. I'm kind of shocked at how well he turned out honestly, I'm not well known for my ability to make nonhumanoid designs, but I think I managed pretty decently. Gave him and most of the others a 3/4 pose, as I think it allows for more visibility in the design. Lakitu- Most of the design juice went into the cloud rather than lakitu themself, I didn't think there was much to work with due to the limiting palette for their design, but I tried my best and think it came out decent, the cloud hard carries though. Piranha Plant- I have no idea why they didn't just make the stem green and bulb orange, I did that and I think it came out pretty good, I also added the larger spots, white lips, and teeth shape of the modern design. Cheep Cheep- One of the smallest design changes here, I honestly think they pretty much hit the nail on the coffin here, the original looks pretty much identical to the modern version, I just made some small tweaks. Spiny- This Spiny is basically just an edited Buzzy Beetle, which to be fair is basically what it was before, I didn't want this one to be as spooky as the beetle though so I gave it more visible eyes, and a shorter shell to fit the spikes. Lava Bubble- I pretty much just gave it eyes and some small tweaks, not much. I don't even think it was really a living creature in the first game like it is in modern games. Slide 5- Mario Mario and the upcoming Luigi are probably what I'm the most disappointed with, and it's mainly just because I had to abide by my own rule that it had to be game accurate, meaning the torso had to be flippable and thus they had to keep that lame pose.. Beyond that my main gripe is that the colors are both really ugly and do not pair with each other really well, anti-aliasing (my beloved) is pretty much impossible on this dude.. I don't hate the fire palette as much though, it's easier on the eyes. I couldn't find a good way to make the eyes work so I just made him look a little angrier with some eyebrows to give some personality. ...Continued in Notes and Creds...
-Nintendo for Source Sprites & Inspiration -Participants on the Princess Toadstool Resprite challenge for inspiration ...Continuing from Instructions... Slide 6- Luigi (Palette Swap) Buckle up, Luigi has like 3 slides. This one is the game-accurate straight up Mario recolor, I will say I do think the green and white works better than the red & gross brownish green. If they gave a choice rather than being locked behind the 2 player mode I would have chosen him any day over mario's gross sprite. Slide 7- Luigi (Original Sprite) This one is a nonrealistic Luigi with his own special sprite, which is still pretty close to Mario's. I removed the eyebrows to make him look more timid, tried to make his face taller, with a different mustache, and overall slimmer. Technically his torso is 1 pixel shorter in order to make the head taller, which unfortunately made the torso mirroring look kinda weird with that one 1 pixel next to the neck. Slide 8- Luigi (Extra Palettes) These are just some extra palettes Brown and Green- Luigi's Palette from SMB Deluxe, his fire palette in that game funnily enough is his regular palette from SMB1 Lime Green and Red- Luigi's Fire palette from Super Mario Maker 2, kinda reminds me of a popsicle, so I always though this palette looked kinda tasty. Slide 9- Toad I tried to make his sprite escape from the hand gesture allegations from the prior with his hands on his hips, and of course added anti-aliasing. I made his spots bigger with a more detailed vest too. The biggest change here is the expression, the old one was kinda boring, but the only readable expression I could make was crying, so I decided he's just REALLY sad the princess is in another castle. Slide 10- Princess Toadstool She inspired this whole project basically, semi recently, like a month ago, a trend went around where pixel artists would resprite her pretty awful sprite, and this is my version. I had fun making it, and wanted to make more, so here we are. Slide 11- Starman Palettes Slide 12- Powerups Not much to say than just my usual amount of anti-aliasing added and trying to give them their more alive-looking appearance they have in modern games. The fire flower was a special challenge because it was difficult to balance everything on the petals with such a limited color palette, and thus had to take a bit of liberty, but I liked how it turned out.
