Story: “Well, listen. I was doing my homework,” (emphasis on was). As soon as my mother came in, I opened the tab on my laptop that had my maths homework but it was too late. “What is that?” My mother enquired. “Nothing,” I gingerly reply. But she saw. “‘Research on witchcraft?’ And why on Earth would you like to know that?” “It’s…uhh.” I wasn’t too sure. I had always had an interest in looking at witchcraft and similar things. Well, I did. While looking through the endless amounts of websites, I discovered this old book that someone had mentioned. Strangest part: No one else knew about it. Even stranger: The bookstore that was selling it was the bookstore my grandmother owned. “Hey, Ma? Umm…there’s a new book. It’s being sold at Grandma’s old bookshop.” “Really?” My mother gave me a ‘why would you like it look’ and continued, “And you’re interested because..? “It looks really…good?” My mother sighed, “Well, I s’pose it wouldn’t hurt to visit the old shop one last time.” The old shop had dramatically changed since the new owner bought it. For the better or for the worse, it was impossible to tell. Stained glass windows, grand paintings of deceased authors from years ago, bookshelves for as far as the eye could possibly see. The walls were decorated with fake pumpkins, spiders and other Halloween-y objects. I searched the infinite amount of books until I found it. I grasped it in my hands. It was heavy, much heavier than any other book I know, almost hard to hold. On the cover was all black with a small, purple gradient. And in a dazzling silver font read “WITCHCRAFT AND ALL OTHER KINDS OF MAGIC”. With effort, I lifted the cover. There was three words in a weird red font: beware, young witch. Then someone grabbed me from behind, but it wasn’t my mother. She was taller than me with golden hair and…are those maroon eyes? I’ve never seen them before. She pulls me back. “We need to get out of here, now. By opening that book you’ve sent them to our location.” I glanced at her, confused and maybe a little concerned. That was…until the world turned a weird shade of lavender and I felt the world break beneath my feet. The last thing I heard: the girl’s voice. “There’s no going back now, you’re a witch, Mai. You. Are. A. Witch!”
