When it was clear he couldn’t continue serving as a soldier, he became a guardian angel of sorts instead. He was commanded to descend to the world disguised as a mortal, to act as a spiritual guide and protect the cats from their invisible enemy. Infodump: Lael, (Lay-EL) means "of God", "belonging to God", and/or "devoted to God". Lael cannot be killed, and he does not age. He can project himself into the minds of others in the form of dreams and visions, which he does to subtly influence his mortal friends and to communicate telepathically with other angels. He is also able to become invisible, which he usually does to avoid social interactions, but he can be convinced to use it for harmless pranks too (among other things). It should be noted that cat angels existing among mortal cats and acting as guides is not a novelty, nor is it unusual for a crippled soldier to take up such a job. Lael is a special case because he is a unique variety of angel, so he approaches the task in a special way. Actual Seraphim cover their feet with their wings for the sake of modesty and humility in the presence of God. I imagine targeting the wings of a being like Lael is a low blow, both literally and figuratively, because having exposed feet would be mortifying. Lael's lower wings are compromised, so he has to get creative to hide his paws. While small accessories are not uncommon among mortal cats, Lael overdresses so much that he gets weird looks, for his foot coverings especially. Lael’s recent trauma and lack of experience on top of his already shy personality makes things very difficult. He struggles just to make connections at first, and is still very shy and reserved, even around the friends he does make. His trials and tribulations typically revolve around fears and troubles relating to socializing and/or feeling self-conscious about his paws. - Timeline - The spiritual war begins. Lael is created (cat-angels are not 'born') and granted his two forms. Lael is wounded in battle and suffers permanent damage to his hind legs, tail, and lower wings. Lael is assigned to the guardian angel role.
