May 20th, 1865 I am still thinking about the men on the walk home, still confused by how their faces turned pale when they saw me. I mean, yes, my family could probably kill you if you didn’t respect us, but other than that there is no reason to be afraid. I rack my brain, trying to figure out what is going on. And something about those men seemed… familiar. I shake my head. I’m just superstitious. And today that would mean I would be burnt at the stake. I finally reach the castle. It has started to rain, and with my white shirt it is a recipe for disaster. I go in through the back, in the servants entrance, already cold and dripping with water. The maids whisper behind my back, looking worried. One of them approaches me. “Your highness, are you alright?” I smile. “Quite.” My smile fades as I walk away, marching back to my room. Several other people notice me, but don’t say anything. They don't need to. I can see the disapproval on their faces. I scowl, my hair dripping in front of my face. When I get to my room I change, forcing myself to step into a corset. I ring the bell for my chambermaid, and she rushes in, cinching the waist. Tighter, tighter… until finally I can hardly breathe. Someone knocks on my door, and I let my hair come down to my shoulders. “Just a second!” I call, placing a small crown on my head. The person opens the door; it is my father, looking much cleaner and nicer than I. He raises an eyebrow, looking at my frizzy hair. “Are you ready, darling?” he asks. “Yes, Father,” I respond. We set off down the corridor, not saying a word. I know he is silently judging me, sizing me up to see how I can do better. I tug unconsciously on my hair. It has begun to curl up in small corkscrews, the tiara beginning to be buried. My father and I reached a room with a gold archway on top, and I took a deep breath. My father glances at me, but I avert my gaze. My father opens his mouth, but stops himself. I reach my hand toward the doorknob and open it, not ready for what is about to happen.
