Wait _________________ "Wait." I turn my head, My narrowed eyes settling On him. He jogs up to me, That familiar awkward smile Plastered on his face. I continue my excursion Without a second thought And pay him no attention Even though I have all of his. He checks up on me, Inquires about my wellbeing What is it to him? He shouldn't even bother. I gesture my shoulders In a shrug, And I bury my face In my hoodie. Is it Aloofness or Anxiety? Perhaps I'll never know. I approach the crosswalk, Having given him No real information. He halts on the Other Side. With a final effort, He whispers, That smile not making it To his eyes. "Wait?" I do not hesitate To isolate myself For the weekend. And For my Life. On Monday, He is not present. Murmurs and Whispers fill the air; He has moved. Moved away. Gone. Absent. Nonexistent. Wait. How can he be gone? Why didn't he tell me? Did he know? Why wouldn't he tell me? Maybe he could Return; He had family All over. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. He didn't return. You never know what you have Until it is already gone. I've learned the Hard way. And now I am the one Stopping at the crosswalk, Turning to face someone, But meeting no warmth in return. And for the first time, I am the one with Eyes full of longing, Whispering just one word With empty hope. "Wait . . . "
