Chapter 7 Lucas Why, why, why did she have to be so cool? I mean, if I even thought I had a chance with her before, how could I think that now? That guy, Crimson, was way bigger than her, and she started the fight and won. "Are you going to start talking, or are you just going to stay quiet?" Jacqueline said. She sounded mad. "Sorry, I wasn't sure what to say," I said as we passed back under the anchor point sign. "Well, you could have said something, Lu. Anything at all," she said, sounding like she wanted to cry. "I wasn't sure I should, 'cause I didn't want to make you more upset," I said. I was being sincere. I really didn't want her to be upset. "Look, I don't know you, you don't know me. Stop acting like you do, okay? You just met me," Jacqueline said, letting go of my arm and turning to face me. "I... uh... look, yeah, I just met you, but I do care about you. And clearly you're upset about something Crimson said, and 'cause I consider you as a friend, and I hope you consider me as one. I want to help you feel better," I said. Great, I have just friend-zoned myself. That's great. Well, better than making a fool of myself by asking her out, I thought. She smiled and hugged me. I hugged her back. Ugh, why didn't I find a way to make her feel better without making it so she never saw me as more than a friend? Ugh, why am I such a good friend? "Thanks, Lu. Now, let's get to bed," she said, letting go of the hug and climbing up the ladder. I followed. I was tired, yes, but I didn't really want to go to a room where Sam and Charlotte were probably badmouthing Jacqueline. "Well, night, Lu," Jacqueline said, walking into her office. I guess she slept in there. "Night," I said, walking down to my room. I opened the door, and there they were, waiting for me. I mean, you would think they were my parents, and I missed curfew. I'm literally an adult. "Where have you been, Lucas?" Sam said. He sounded mad, but not like mad-mad, more like disappointed-mad, you know? "Where was I? I was hanging out with Jacqueline, but you knew that," I said, trying to take the power back. "Really, Lu? You're a good kid. She's a monster. Do you know how many people she has probably k1lled? Lu, I mean, she's a criminal, and she will bring you down with her," Charlotte said, standing up. "Really? 'Cause it sounds like you have never really talked to her. 'Cause from the small time I've known and talked to her, she has shown me that pirates aren't as bad as you put them up to be I think you just don't like her I mean, have you ever even had a real conversation with her? It seems like she just wants your love I mean, you saw her face when you didn't hug her She looked crushed, even though she knew you didn't like her I mean, you are her older sister. I think all she wants is for you to act like it," I said . I knew it wasn't my place to say something, but I felt like I needed to say something. Charlotte stayed quiet and sat down. "I'm going to sleep," I said, lying down on my bed. I felt bad for what I said, but I wasn't going to take it back. I meant what I said, even if it was rude.
Question of the day : do you think what Lucas said was out of line ? Why do you think that?
