⠀⠀⠀⠀"Nat, Charlie's here!" Mum called me from the bottom of the stairs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I'll be right done," I answered, checking myself in the mirror. I adjusted a few of my dark blonde curls. Personally, I thought I looked great. I wore my new yellow tank top with brown shorts, and I had my hair half up. Mum let me use curlers last night, and I was super excited. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I don't have all day, Nat!" It was Charlie. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I'm coming," I said, skipping down the stairs. "You don't need to be so impatient." ⠀⠀⠀⠀He grinned when he saw me. "It was worth the wait." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Aww," I smiled, "you're so sweet." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Have a good time, both of you, and bring her back by eleven," Mum said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Of course, Ms. Carter," he nodded solemnly. "You have my word." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Very good. Now get going, you're wasting time!" ⠀⠀⠀⠀Charlie and I lay on the hood of his car, looking up at the sky. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Nat," he began, "can I tell you a secret?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀I rolled over to face him, "Sure." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I sometimes think my dad really isn't de^d." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"What?" I asked, avoiding his eyes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I just feel it. Like, sure he fell of a cliff, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's de^d." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Charlie, it was a long fall." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"I know, but..." he sighed. "I just want him back, you know? Don't you ever miss your dad?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀Something hurt inside me. I wanted to yell at Charlie and tell him his dad is alive, but brainwashed and controlled by the Germans. I wanted to say that no, I don't miss my dad, because I see him everyday. ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Charlie, can I tell you a secret?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀"Course, Nat." ⠀⠀⠀⠀"My dad's not de^d."
