I find it crazy, but Ethan, my brother born 6 years earlier than me, acts like it's normal. We only had a smart house for 3 years, but Ethan acts like smart houses are ancient. I walk into the smart door and click kitchen. In about 3 seconds, I‘m transported. Ethan sits at the table reading an EVObook, “Amber look!” he yells, I roll my eyes and walk over. Ethan points at the screen “Look! It's a new eye chip” he exclaims “Can you pleaseeee buy it for me?!?.” I shake my head “Why do you need it so bad? You already have like a billion gadgets!” I turn away to get my breakfast “But-” “No buts!” I yell at him and head to the fridge. I click oatmeal and in seconds it is sitting on the fridge tray. I heat it in the smart bake and eat it silently. Once I’m done, I head over to Mom’s room. “Mom! I’m heading to Novas’!” I yell. She replies “Ok! See you soon”. I go to my room to pack my things. In reality, I’m going camping, but it is illegal now to go somewhere where there are no cameras, so Nova and I improvise, we say we are going to each other's houses, but in reality, we are going to the woods. I walk out with a blanket, poles, and some food. Ambers veiw Nova and I usually meet at a bus stop near her house and walk to the woods. Today was no different. As I walk to the bus stop, I cross Nova's house, yank off my tacker, and place it under a large stone in her yard. Once I’m done, I stand back, admire my work, and continue walking. Soon enough, I’m at the bus stop and see Nova leaning against one of the Iron poles holding it up. “Hey!” She shouts at me, “What took you so long?” “What do you mean, I’m early!” I answer, looking at my watch “Anyway let's go.” We walk about half a mile along the path until we arrive at the electric fence, Nova squeezes through a small gap and motions for me to come, I climb through the wires. A few weeks ago, Nova discovered that the electric fence doesn’t run on Sundays from 10 to 11 am, so we always camp on Sundays. Once us both are on the other side, we start walking, when I see an animal track in the mud and examine it, “It looks like a possum, we should be safe” and continue. After about a mile we find a clearing and start setting up. Since the government banned anything used for camping, we had to improvise, I brought the materials used for a tent, and she brought cooking supplies and food. “Help me get this pole in!” I whisper-yell. Even though we are far away from civilizations, we are always still careful about our volume in case someone hears us. After about 30 minutes, we finish setting up and admire our work, it is not the best tent, but it works well for what we’re doing. “Nice work!” We both say at the same time. “Jinx!” I say. Nova makes a pouty face and acts like she talking but doesn’t make a sound. “Ok fine, you can talk.” I act like it's a great burden to say it. Nova laughs “Let's eat!” Novas walks away to find water and I dig through Nova's bag and pull out two protein bars, two ramen packets, and a water filter. I wait about 5 minutes before she returns with a bucket of water. She carefully pours it into the water filter, which heats up after a few minutes. “Here take it” Nova says as she hands the water filter to me. I open and pour the water into the ramen cups. Suddenly, I hear a bark, “W-what was that?” Nova asks, clearly on nerve from the bark. I knew it was a dog, since we used to have one before the government took him away so I go to investigate, “Amber stop!” Nova whisper-yells from the tent, I look through the branches “It is just a dog Nova! Nothing scary!” I whisper-yell back. The dog trots out of the branches, a beautiful white dog covered in grime and dirt with brown patches, I clamp my hand over Nova’s mouth in case she screams, but somehow Nova holds back her scream and walks over to the dog. She lifts her hand hesitantly and strokes the dog's ear when I notice a strange white patch above its eye. “Nebula? Is that you?” I speak, recognizing the dog, my old pet. Nebula barks happily as if saying “Yes! Yes I am Nebula!” and I stroke him. He curls up in the tent with me like we always used to do, and I relax a little and read an old-fashioned book. The book speaks of the outdoors, camping, and nothing about smart houses! I hear Nova scuttle around outside with Nebula, playing fetch. I look at my watch, it was already 6 o'clock! I go outside and find Nova sleeping with Nebula at the base of a tree, I decide to start preparing dinner.
