Short story ⤵ Your body ached with the familiar sensation of sickness. The healers saw you through a very mild form of whitecough, which you were now recovering from; they did well to take care of you. They had no trouble with your condition, but rather your...spunk, to put it kindly. Keeping a young warrior like yourself in one place was difficult, and it often tested the patience of the curt—sometimes surly—medicine cats. Goosesnap had relaxed with his old age, but Stagcrash still had that blunt, badger-like attitude that she exuded as an apprentice. While your clanmates were asleep, you decided it'd do you good to get some fresh, salty air. You quietly padded out of the den and went to sit at the entrance. You knew Hickorycry was on his night shift, but he wouldn't bother telling you to head back inside. He simply acted as if he didn't see you, which you were thankful for. The moon was bright, and it reflected off of the sea in a hazy glow. It rocked and wavered as if trying to lull you back to sleep. "What do you think you're doing out of the den?" You had hardly noticed Stagcrash padding up from behind, which was odd, because one always knew. She always smelled of onion grass. Not unpleasant, but identifiable. "'You're not doing anything?' Do you think I'm mousebrained?" She meowed in response to your excuse. "You seriously can't stay still for one second, can you?" You shook your head. She sighed and stared at you with stern eyes. "What can I do to help you sleep?" She said it almost as if it were painful...."Sing you a song?" She nearly shouted in bewilderment. "What are you, a kit? I'm not singing you a lullaby, I'm a medicine cat." there was an extra sass in "medicine cat" that reminded you of her long-suffering. Still, she was entertaining, and you wouldn't come easy to her. You asked again. To your surprise, she replied: "Do you promise not to cause Goosesnap and me any more grief?" You swiftly nodded your head. She studied your form a moment before she exhaled, turning her attention to the sea. And she sung. It was strange when she sung. It wasn't full of sarcasm, or deadpan, or any exasperation. It was peaceful and soft, almost kind. And as you sat with her in the warm breeze of a noisy night, you silently thanked the stars to call Coveclan home. End.
