River groaned and swung her backpack up onto her back. Amber grinned. “Good luck.” She said, “You’ll need it.” Fae agreed. River rolled her eyes. “Don’t remind me.” She told them, heading out of the classroom as the bell rang once again. River hurried down the hallway, echoing with students chattering and lockers slamming. River stopped at her locker and hurriedly opened it, grabbing her binder and giving the one of the mink pictures in her locker a quick boop on the nose before she shut her locker. River had two theriotypes, a Mink, and a Hoary Fox. At least, so far, anyway. She bustled into her classroom, moments before the bell rang for the final time. Samantha turned to look at her. “Did you remember to do the homework?” She asked. River nodded, and Samantha smiled. “Great! You forgot last time…” She added. River playfully shoved her shoulder. “Oh, you be quiet. You forgot it, too.” She argued. Before Samantha could defend herself, the teacher began to speak. “I hope you all remembered the homework, because it makes up half of your grade.” He began. River just barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes. He had droned on about this a couple days ago when he assigned the homework. Suddenly, a slightly familiar feeling came over her. River froze. No, no, no, no, no! Not a shift! Not right now! She dug her fingernails into her wrist, then, after she had a little control, raised her hand. The teacher called on her. “What?” He asked, annoyed that she had interrupted his lecture. “May I use the bathroom?” River asked. He sighed and nodded, and River dashed off. Luckily, the bathroom was empty. She let herself go into the shift, and ran around the bathroom until the shift ended. River stood and went to wash her hands, but froze as she realized that there was someone else there watching her. She didn’t know the girl. “Who? Uhm, who are you?” River asked nervously. “I’m Mia.
