\--A Light in the Dark--/ --- Chapter 3 “Here they come!” cried Holly, nervously. The Clan cats crept through the undergrowth, assassins in the moonlight. “A night battle. How … presumptuous. They think they can beat us?” whispered a cat that was as dark as the night sky. “Clearly, Shadow. But they are wrong.” said a cat next to him. “Raven! Shadow! Quiet! They’re here.” whispered Duck, unsheathing her claws. The Clan cats whispered some orders and flicked their tails. “Hello, there!” said Duck, making the Clan cats jump, “Were you trying to be stealthy and invade our camp? You don’t have to invade. There’s prey if you’d like some.” The Clan cats looked at each other, surprised at the welcoming air. One Clan cat, a grey-red tabby, cried, “They invaded our territory! They have no right to stay here!” “Actually,” Duck laughed mirthlessly, that comment had obviously hit home, “We were here before you. We are told stories as kits of our first leader, Domino, who welcomed the Clans! He was kind to them, taught them how to hunt and gave them prey, and how did they repay him? They stole the prey, all of it, and left them with nothing. Domino tried to talk to them, talk some sense into them, and they killed him. Then, they ran away. I don’t see that as us invading your territory so much as the other way around.” She hissed. The grey-red tabby she-cat looked taken aback. She started to reply, but was cut off. “Twice this moon, you attacked one of our own. Me, when I was trying to sell you items for your benefit, and then you attacked Skunk, our blind member! Do you have any honour at all?” “I- I don’t know what to say …” “Then don’t say anything! Attack us! That’s what you came here for, isn’t it?” Just as she said that, a viscous looking tom with a long scar along his belly yowled, “Let’s give them what they want, Firemist! WolfClan, attack!” He lunged at Duck, claws unsheathed. She slashed his muzzle, and cried, “Protect Frosty and her kits! Holly, Raven, you’re with me!” Firemist yowled to the Clan cats, “WolfClan, stop the attack!” she turned to Duck, “Did you say kits?” “Yes. Frosty gave birth during sunset.” “You have newborn kits in your camp? I’m so sorry, we had no idea. I never wanted this battle, but this- why would we fight weaker cats that were defending themselves?” her voice raised to a yowl, “WolfClan! Retreat!” “No!” hissed the cat with a scar, “What are you doing? WolfClan! Do not retreat! We are not cowards!” WolfClan leaped towards them, claws unsheathed. The Great War had begun.
