If you think these swords would be too heavy to swing quickly, keep in mind this is only one perspective, swords were usually kept thin in one axis to minimize weight. Another technique used was distal taper; how the blade gets thinner towards the tip. But thin swords break more easily, so typically two grades of steel (or any metals) were used, the softer, more flexible steel (low-carbon) was used on the middle so the sword could flex and disperse the energy, while the harder and stiffer steel (high-carbon) was used on the edges in order to cut better. Pommels (the piece of metal on the back of the handle) were used as counterweights, shifting the center of mass further back and allowing the sword to be swung more easily.
