Book 2, Chapter 5: Caring Hurts ---- Umbra had disapered after his little outburst. Phantasm had stepped in to explain about the big battle of the kits, Barbarian's rising, and how Fortuna had sacrificed himself. As Phatntasm retold it, they payed attention to themself, how they told it. Phantasm knew they cared, even if being alone in that hole had made Phantasm not used to caring. It hurt to see Umbra think they don't care about Fortuna. It really did. Vine nodded sympheticly after they finished. "That jester was good to be around, even if I only knew them for a short time. Umbra's just mourning, don't take it too hard." Crypt shook his head. "That's the thing. I'm not sure if its just grief anymore.." A beat of silence. "So! I don't know you, kit? What's your name?" Vine grinned at Phantasm, a little forced. -- Umbra had stopped to sit down on a rock. Angerily, he banged his fist on it. He didn't care that it hurt. He cared about Fortuna, and no one else he thought cared really did. Phantasm and Crypt didn't understand. He could have stopped him. If he had thrown his hat. The thought occured to him later that evening, when it was wholly useless for the rest of his life. He'd thrown his hat into the ocean that night. If he couldn't even think of using it to save someone, he shouldn't have it. Phantasm and Crypt probably haven't even noticed. They both stuck him down in a cramped area and forced him on this voyage to a place he never wanted to see again. Fortuna and him had discovered this island together. It hurt like a blade to come back. But he didn't have any tears left. -- Crypt had watched as Phantasm got an entire tour of the Lost Kit City. They had added a few more houses. A few more kits. Crypt scarcely payed attention. He was thinking about what Umbra had told him. Mourning wasn'tr an excuse anymore. It had been months. They had all mourned. Now Crypt was afraid Umbra might never recover. Or if he finds out what Crypt can do. It was hard, knowing you can do something to save a friend, but at a cost Crypt didn't want to pay. --
