Once I am out, I know what to do. I gallop down the stone path and towards the well that stands solitary in the night air. Minister Lefte, who was in charge of my education, showed me a map of Hyrule Castle one day a few years ago. She mentioned a well right outside the dungeon that the royal family could use to escape in a time of crisis. Well, maybe this isn’t the exact scenario the well was made for, but I am definitely in a time of crisis. “Zelda? You’re not planning to jump in, are you?” Tri asks behind me. Without a glance back, I nod and dive into the well. Tri has no choice but to follow. I hate this feeling of plummeting through a seemingly endless dark hole. My stomach flips, and just as I’m about to be sick, splash! I hit the water hard, and it just so happens to be freezing. Icy cold trickles through my veins, soaking into my skin, but I keep going, swimming as hard as I can. After what seems like forever, I see an old, rusted ladder ahead. I swim harder and reach it, scurrying up its rungs like I’m flying. The sweet light of day greets me, warming my frozen bones. “Zelda!” Tri says. “There’s a village near here. Want to go see if they can direct us?” “We’re pretty close,” I say, looking at our map. “Well…okay.” We trek across the rolling green hills of this region, and then finally arrive at Suthorn Village, a quaint, tiny village full of simple wooden houses. “Who are you?” I look down to see a small girl. She has long brown hair tied back in two pigtails and bright shining eyes. “I’m…Zelda,” I reply. “Why do you have Link’s hood? Is Link back?” the girl asks. I shake my head. “Tri, can we just keep going? There’s nothing here for us.” Tri spins in the air. “Okay…we’re really close.” We travel through the surrounding forest. Before long, I wish we’d stopped; as a princess, I’m not used to physical activity like this. “Zelda, look!” Tri insists. “It’s the house…” I look up and gasp. The small cottage is almost completely consumed by a rift. “Just great!” I complain, kicking a rock on the ground. “Hey, don’t give up!” Tri replies. “My friends can help fix this…I sense them in the rift. Come with me.” The fairy leads me up a hill and to the edge of the rift. A small ripple appears in its purple nothingness, a single drop of gold radiating out around it. Tri spins around it, and a beacon of light shimmers out from the ripple. The ripple grows bigger and bigger until it’s a gold-tinged hole in the rift, just big enough for me to jump in. Tri flies back to my side and looks at it with content. “Do I have to jump in that?” I ask. I already know the answer, but I want to be sure. “Well…yes,” Tri admits. “I know it might seem scary and all, but you’ll be okay.” I nod and stare towards the entry point. I know what I have to do. Hyrule needs me. Link needs me. My family needs me! I take a deep breath and run forward. With a high leap, I jump right into the rift. It swallows me whole.
