Press [B] to build when you collect/buy enough materials. Press [Space] to clear any stats on the screen Don't be out past 9PM. The zombies get more dangerous at that time. Visit your shop to purchase or sell materials for money. Visit the Upgrade merchant hidden on the map to increase your chances of survival.
