Spiders skittered around the woods. It was really dark- perfect for them. The Forbidden Woods were full of spiders. Spiders here, spiders there, spiders everywhere. Flicker hated spiders with a passion. Sure, they didn’t dare venture up the trees to the colony, but going down to hunt was a real pain. And it was Flicker's cycle to hunt. Sometimes, Flicker wasn’t able to hold all the flashbangs he needed to take just to take a short walk. To make matters worse, they were out of flashbangs, so lanterns were the best they could use right now. He pulled his spear out of a wolf spider’s corpse. Flicker dragged the spear over the grass to clean it. Spider blood tastes terrible, he didn’t want it in his lantern mouse. If he ever found one, of course. “Come on,” Flash whined from a few feet away, “you’ve been over at that corpse for way too long!” Flicker groaned before walking over to Flash. “Shut up.” “No, I don’t think I will, if it annoys you~” Flash winked at Flicker, his eyes reflecting the lantern-light. “What if I said it doesn’t annoy me?” “I’d know you’re lying. I know you, Flicker. I know what makes you and everyone else in the colony tick… tick… tick…” Flicker hit Flash in the face. “Stop it!” “Heh, you wish~!” Flash said as he carefully removed Flicker’s paw. Another slugcat came running over to the pair. He was holding a single flashbang and a spear on his back. Of course. Flare. “Hey guys!” he called to Flicker and Flash, “Sorry I’m late! I went out looking for flashbangs before catching up with you two.” “I can see that.” Flicker groaned. “Oh yeah, Flash, Cherry needs you.” Flare said as he made it to the two. Flash rolled his eyes and started off in the direction Flare came from. Flicker breathed a sigh of relief as he watched Flash leave. He looked at Flare. “Ready for hunting?” “Ready as I’ll ever be!” Flare hopped ahead with his spear and flashbang ready. Flicker had to run after Flare to catch up. There was no doubt that he was very fast. They walked in silence for a while. No spiders were brave enough to go near the lantern-light. Flicker wasn’t sure how long they had been walking, nor how far away they were from the rest of the colony. He flipped his spear in his hand as he walked, something he did when he was bored. Flare noticed this. He couldn’t have Flicker bored right now! A conversation could help. “So… killed anything interesting lately?” Flicker looked up at Flare, confused. “No, not really. Why do you ask?” “Uh… just a bit bored.” Flare responded. It wasn’t a full lie. He had been getting a bit bored, but it was mostly to help Flicker. Flicker looked away, further into the woods. “In that case, let’s talk about something a bit less boring. How about we talk about what happened a couple cycles ago?” That was a subject Flare wanted to avoid. “The Rot incident. Yeah.” A brief moment of silence followed. Neither of the slugcats wanted to continue the conversation. For your convenience, I will give you an idea of what happened. A mobile rot cyst made its way to the colony’s camp in the trees. It got two slugcats and a pup. It was only killed when one of the guards had the idea to blow it up and landed a hit on its core. It was a pretty sensitive topic at the moment. The colony leaders had told the guards and the witnesses of the event not to speak of it to loners, pups, or slugcats of other colonies. Eventually, someone had to say something, so Flicker spoke up. “That… Rot… it looked similar to the infection on Witch.” “And? Do you suggest we… exile her? For doing nothing wrong?” “Yes, I do. In fact, I already spoke to Cyprus about it. She said that she’ll go over it with the others, but she thinks it’ll be a unanimous vote against Witch.” “What?!” Flare squeaked in horror. “She’s a part of the colony! She hasn’t hurt us so far!” "She will. Everyone is sure of it." Flare didn't want to believe it. So he said it. "Well, I don't believe you." "But we’ve seen what the Rot can do. You should believe me, and everyone else for that matter." “Is it worth exiling her for? We haven’t seen any signs of her becoming dangerous. Who would we be to exile an innocent slugcat? We shouldn’t do it until we know for sure that it’s dangerous.” “Fine, suit yourself. She’ll be gone in a cycle. You can go with her if you really want. She’ll kill you.” Flare didn't know how to respond. He opened his mouth, then closed it. Flicker was just having a bad day, that was all. He tried to forget about the conversation as they continued looking for prey.
