|| D A W N || Ep1 || Bangle was a sleek black street cat, a resident of a shabby, unwelcoming cat colony that had carved out a meagre existence in a neglected part of the city. The colony was anything but friendly; with its scrappy inhabitants, survival was a constant battle. The small clearing where they lived often echoed with the sounds of disputes, as wars over food were a regular occurrence. Herds of disdain hung heavy in the air, with many cats nursing grudges that seemed never to fade. Life was tough in this unforgiving environment. Fortunately for Bangle, she possessed an exceptional talent for hunting, which allowed her to usually catch her dinner despite the chaotic atmosphere. Her skills had earned her a degree of respect among the other cats, though it didn’t eliminate the underlying tension. The one bright spot in her otherwise solitary life was Pear, a small and gentle ginger tom cat who always seemed to see the best in Bangle. As she made her way over to a pile of moss—her usual resting spot—Bangle let out a heavy sigh. She had returned empty-pawed from her latest hunt, a disappointing failure that churned in her stomach. More than anything, she yearned for Pear's comforting presence, the warmth of his friendship a soothing balm to her frustrations. Suddenly, the tranquillity of the clearing was shattered by a long, piercing screech that sent a jolt of panic through her. Whipping around swiftly, Bangle’s heart raced when she saw Olive—a pale cat known for her reclusive nature—stumbling into view. Olive was not known for her amiability and typically preferred lurking in the shadows. Yet Bangle had caught her watching from afar on occasion, her large eyes carrying a strange, glazed expression that hinted at hidden thoughts. Now, as Bangle took in the sight before her, the horror struck home. Olive held a small, pale orange body delicately in her jaws—Pear. The sight of her friend, vulnerable and motionless, sent a rush of dread coursing through Bangle. In that moment, the challenges of the colony and the struggles of their everyday lives faded into the background, replaced by a singular, heart-wrenching fear. ‘“What did you do to him?” Bangle shouted. “It wasn't me!” Olive mewed, tears now in her eyes. “I pulled him out of the river and—” Olive couldn't speak anymore. Bangle realized that Olive must be right. Pear was soaked to the skin. But he was breathing. Everyone, help! Bangle called. She knew her colony was mean, but surely they didn’t let each other die. Bangles assumption was correct. Bangles call sent Stone clambering out of his den. Stone was basically the leader of the colony . He organized the attacks, and got the best den. “CATS!”, he called, “come here and help!” Stone assisted Bangle to carry Pear to his den. “ Why are you helping me?” Bangle asked. Stone got an odd expression on his face. A mixture of terror and longing. “The queen” he said, before he turned around and padded to a new resting spot. Bangle had heard about the queen, a powerful cat who lived in the forest. What did she matter to Stone? Bangle was exhausted. She’d figure this out another day. The sun was lowering in the sky. Bangle stretched out, and closed her eyes. END OF CHAPTER ONE.
