In an indiscriminate future, a mysterious alien race has overwhelmed the Earth at the 100th anniversary of successful global dearmament. Undefended, the globe attempts to rearm, but fails to do so quickly enough to effectively defend against the pathetic yet gigantic autonomous alien army, and humanity is spread thin. Spry Swallow is an orphan taken in by what was left of the UN, and at just 18, was shipped off, assigned to protect a remote settlement in the old California Central Valley.
