Montague was built in 1934, originally as a modified 57XX for the GWR's tighter areas, like yards and stations, originally built as an 0-4-2, the engine was found to swing it's cab as it moved over tight curves, giving it a wobble that led to it's nickname, "Duck". The engine was sent to Crewe after an incident involving runaway vans and a barber shop. It was given a 2-4-2 arrangement to center it's driving wheels and almost completely eradicate the wobble, it still swung it's cab on tighter curves, but far less often. The engine was eventually sent to the NWR and it stayed there as a station pilot at Knapford until it was given it's own little line, the so-called Little Western.
